So it's time to change the impeller, 1st time with this motor (D1-20), but I've done Yanmars before. The PO left a bag of spares, including 2 new impeller kits.
My problem is not knowing which one to use(or even if its the correct part), and i won't start the job until i know the replacement is correct.
The impellers are physically identical in size and dimensions, but differ in the shaft - one is pressed in and smooth, the other threaded and screwed in. I'm assuming the slightly different part numbers account for this.
I have the correct Owners Manual (pretty pics only), the correct Workshop Manual (detail, but no numbers), and an exploded view of the pump (below), but the part no. shown(part 18) bears no resemblance at all to the numbers on the boxes.
Is it a generic part? or is it engine specific, and where would i find the right numbers? (If it is generic, which one should i use?)
If somebody could point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks very much.
i think the one on the right might already have been used,it has signs of the brass sleeve has been in salt and no packing powder
Left hand one looks like type used in D1-30
Make sure you note the way the vanes of the impeller sit, to get the orientation correct.
Have a look at the surface the impeller rubs on, if it is badly scored, it is probably time to replace.
On ebay there is a kit from the UK that supplies a new outer plate, with a teflon washer and thumb screws to allow
no tools replacement. This is designed to stop the rubbing of the impeller and scoring, if shell gets in there. I installed this set up and so far
it has worked a treat, the impeller is still good as new after a trip up to the Whitsunday's and back.
cheers Richard

Yeah, the pack was opened, the other was not, but the part is definitely unused. Just a bit of oxidation in the sleeve. No powder showing cause i rubbed a bit of glycerine on it before i decided to stop and check with the brains trust.
One brand of Italian-made aftermarket impeller I bought for my Yanmar had the threaded pin just like the one on the right of your pic. It worked ok but did not last anywhere near as long as the OEM ones.

So is it better to put glycerine on the impeller or grease? I've heard both. Does it matter?
Both the (Volvo) Operator and Workshop manuals say grease suitable for rubber (so nothing petroleum based), but supply glycerine in the kits - go figure!
Glycerine can also be vegetable based so possible that is what Volvo supply in the kit.
OK, peanut butter it is.
