Anyone recognize this yacht? Probably in Wollongong. 29 feet long and either a Van de Stadt design or inspired by the firm. Owners who are beginners and are looking for assistance to sail this down the coast. I don't want to commit myself or a friend till I have more info.

European production yacht late 60s early 70's.

I'd hazard a guess that it's a van de stadt design. He did a few boats with that style of window and he did plenty of transom hung rudders at that time.

No other photos. I checked the Van de Stadt catalog and found nothing. The hatchway looks like a Pandora but the boat size has me confused.

"Ghost Rider" rings a bell, but not very loudly. I've looked at her and wondered myself. It does look VDS-ish but I certainly can't place it.

I would worry about the rust stains on ther lower rudder gudgeons. Through-bolts on hull mount need checking.

If I take the job I will do a check on everything. I was curious if anyone recognized the boat. If it's actually a Van de Stadt it will sail fairly well. From what I can gather from text messages the owners have never sailed before and the boat is stopping off in my home port on her way to Melbourne! If it is going to Melbourne I will be suggesting by truck!

The owner is there now. I managed to convince him the best move would be to use a truck to Melbourne. He is having trouble organising the crane etc and this would not be made easy because he is trying to learn English!. I'm thinking the costs involved with the crane and truck are worth more than he thinks the boats worth.

I recon your onto it, I'd have a guess at a couple o grand either end for a crane and probably 3 grand to truck it and hey presto your free boat ain't free no more !

I don't see it being put onto a truck and getting to Melbourne for less than 8k, the cost of getting the boat unrigged, the keel off or a travel cradle made to suite, lift on and off. So realistically a 9 or 10k exercise by the time it is back in the water 550nm to the south. Delivery by sail is about the only option.

The trucks are set up for keel yachts, they are doing this trip all the time. Getting the mast down is an easy job. Trucking is much easier, cheaper and safer than having a sail delivery. I will drive up shortly and have a chat with him and see how it's all going.

Spent a couple of hours on this vessel this morning and he has obviously received a quote for a delivery Brett! Better value than the trucking and crane quotes and I suggested he goes for that. The costs for trucking was very reasonable but the crane hire was proving difficult in Wollongong and then he was worried about the other end.
It's a nice boat. I can remember this boat from years ago, magazine article or something. The new owner met the older gentleman who built her over an 8 year period. Hull and deck look like hand laid woven rovings. Nice interior with a similar layout to a Compass 28, full headroom in the saloon. The hull looks like a stretched J24 with a typical Van de Stadt style cabin. This will sail very well. Standing rigging looks old. Halyards and the furling line are wire! Quality sails, slightly grubby but 8/10. Main has two reefs and there are horns at the mast. Reefing lines somewhere in the cabin. Epirb and a good bilge pump.
The pushpit is broken and the guardrails are damaged. Some boat broke off the moorings and bumped into her. The bottom was reasonably clean with some weed that will be easily cleaned off. I gave him instructions to have a swim as I left and he went into town to buy some swimmers!
This was though an exceptional buy.

When we get to meet I do owe you a lot of beers Ramona! Maybe at a JB regatta.
I got contacted by Arthur thru my Business. I sent him a quote that was understanding of his predicament when I put 2 and 2 together, which he accepted very quickly. Will have to get it done asap (aiming on leaving on the NW change Saturday morning to get to eden in time for the switch back south) as I have another delivery Airlie to Sydney early next month.
I don't think he has the other end fully sorted as yet, have sent a list to check off over the next couple of days.

The shrouds are very slack, especially the lowers. Arthur spent the day bolting down the genoa tracks and doing odd jobs. He is a nice bloke but a real novice. He has a hard dinghy too and I'm not sure what he has planned for that. Probably fit on the foredeck.

She goes relatively well, has a dirty bum but has averaged 4.5 getting down to Montague Island yesterday afternoon.
Unfortunately the exhaust has come up a cropper so some work to do today as I head back towards Batemans Bay then Ulladulla. Did not want to try my luck getting to Eden so going with the safer option.
Discussion with Arthur, has him looking to sell the boat. The dollars he is asking is a great buy.

It was an exceptional buy that's for sure. If Arthur gets an offer similar to what he paid and does some crewing for other people, I'm sure that would be the best outcome.

I agree, and will still be an exceptional buy for the next person, even with the knowledge that the motor is now due for a major overhaul. Unfortunately Arthur started a little too big and was unawares the $ he paid was not the total cost of owning a yacht.

He advised that yesterday arvo. Weather is not conducive to getting there in the next 3 days. 2 gents are coming to look at the boat tomorrow from Newcastle with the view to buy it. As it is a 5 hour drive each way I reckon they are just ticking their boxes to confirm their intention to buy. Arthur's indecision and varying sell price may bite him on the bum as this could be his easy out.
Have spent the last 2 days cleaning her up so is nice enough looking now I would find it hard to not just hand over the $.

The new owner rang today looking for a mooring here.

Would not call $7500 needing a new motor a good buy.
No mention of the the engine troubles either.

Does not need a total motor replacement, just manifold/exhaust done and alternator.
The owner has put a fair amout of negotiating room in the $7500.
Had the motor running this morning doing checks before moving it to Greenwal Point tomorrow (unless plans are changed again).

Yes I'm having trouble keeping up with the change of plans! The price on Gumtree at the moment is 6,500. I must admit to suggesting this amount when asked what I thought it was worth. I can supply an identical engine and gearbox for $500 if anyone is interested. Manual start and no alternator.

I get the impression you guys are dealing with a back packer that had big plans but now has shifted the plans elsewhere.

The owner securing this Van de Stadt to a local mooring this afternoon. Still dead keen to get her to Melbourne!

It will be on the market for a long time at that price. The Adams 31 is twice the boat at 16000

I can assure you he really wants to keep this boat. Probably like a lot of boats on the market it has an asking price way too high. "Yes dear I'm trying to sell this boat, look here see the ad"!

He might struggle to sell it, if he keeps it advertised in it current category...
