I am looking at moving from the north side to the inner west, Summer Hill, Ashfield, Haberfield area. If I do I'll probably move MB down from Pittwater to the western harbour.
Where are the good mooring bays for access, parking, dinghy storage and weather protection?

I was in Five Dock Bay North for over a year. Fantastic spot: easy to get to, free unlimited parking, dinghy storage on grass / beach. Little fetch so often still except that the nice boat ramp is used quite a bit on weekends so a few motorboat waves but mostly from light recreational fishing boats. You want to be as close to the dinghy storage as possible; less rowing, further from channel out of bay. North Western spots seemed to be impacted by fast ferry waves a little.

I did hear that some yacht owners had accessed the end of the floating pontoon at the ramp on a good high tide - I was never game to try but def worth checking out (even if it was only on a king tide it could be useful).

I kind of miss it - but I don't miss motoring all the way to a decent breeze or tacking down river.

I think Drummoyne or Balmain would be good if you can get in a protected spot - closer to the Harbour - but the waiting list back then was a while and I wanted to move further east.

I've just joined the forum, so here is my first post. Recently I've been thinking of moving from Port Hacking to the Harbour. After a bit of investigation I put in mooring applications for Drummoyne East and Drummoyne Bay.

My priorities were: convenient access from my home in southern Sydney, didn't want to be too far up-river, and the waiting lists are reasonably short.

What I can't get a very clear idea about the area is access. There are no handy boat ramps, so I'm interested to know from anyone familiar with the area the best access points, dinghy launching or storage locations etc. Five Dock Bay North looks appealing but I can't apply due to length restrictions.

There is some dinghy storage on the rocks in the park on the east end of Drummoyne Ave. Rock shelf so can be a bit trickier than a sand beach depending on the tide. Be careful as the rocks near the dinghies can be slippery - walk slowly and upright. Avoid oysters on South Western side. I used this spot for 6 months or so and it was okay. A bit tight for places but good parking access.

There is also another spot which I think is at the end of Queen Victoria Street, on the grass above the beach. You need to be able to drag the dinghy up the sand, up a 2 foot wall, and up the grass slope. I think I was chaining it to the fence when I was on a temp mooring here. Also good parking access.

That's all I know of - there may be more.

Woodford bays awesome but not quite inner west. Parking dinghy all sweet. Servo/bottle o 1k away. Sheltered. Closer to the bridge. 3 month wait.

Thanks DrRog for the detail. I'll go have a sticky beak. I'm not sure clambering about on rock shelves sounds too appealing!

Steve, likewise thanks for suggesting Woodford. I'm not familiar with it but I like the idea of good access even if I have to drive a bit further.

My boat has been out of action the last two years, but the process of resurrecting starts on Friday when it come out of the water for an anti-foul and lots of general maintenance. Busy time coming up.
