The Hartley Nationals have been on in lake Macquarie the last week.
I have been watching a little of the racing and I am surprised at their speed!
Some nice, well cared for boats amongst the group.

Richard Hartley designed these in 1959 and for sure should be given far more kudos among the top echelons of Kiwi designers, than he gets. So the 60 year anniversary of the class. They will be going strong for at least another 60.

Even the old, heavy original boats sail well. These boats at the Nationals look like the original boats but they are far from the original concept. More of a racing dinghy with a lid than trailer sailer.

Sadly it did not stop a theft/break in on some of our boats.

I built a TS16, launched 1988. A lovely boat, great fun sailing.

Our boat was sail number 1421. The boat in the photo is sail number 538, so built well before 1988 but still sailing in nationals competitions . When we were sailing the association was doing a great job of maintaining the original design. At one stage the association was allowing a fibreglass hull, but maintaining the hull shape and with the same minimum mass.

I got all nostalgic a few years ago and had a quick look at building another. You could still buy plans for the wooden version, but I could not find much about the glass version.

I re-built a H16 to race specks and raced the much heavier and older national champ boat for a number of years , minum weight is 350kg from memory mine was 357kg and the other boat was 365kg. A beautiful boat to sail.

I had 1180, a little heavy to campaign seriously but a fun little boat for sure
