I had the book and read it through. I think the guy had smoked a bit too much dope and was a bit paranoid about survival.

Would you happen to be in France at the Canal du Midi? The Canal du Midi is World Heritage Listed. Google it up to learn more about it. It was built for commercial shipping to avoid the Strait of Gibraltar and the pirates of the Barbary Coast.

It is on my "bucket list" to charter a vessel like "Meander" in your posted pic and travel the length of the Canal du Midi.

Nice photos Southace, terrific way to get around the continent…but doesn't that blue barge's design bear more than a passing resemblance to the flip top of a packet of french cigarettes?

Cheers cisco kid. I'm giving France a wide berth since upon hearing the sad news LJ passed nearly 20 years ago I was looking forward to chrispy frogs legs and sharing some salty sea dog story's!
Anyway most of my travel has been between Cotswolds,Oxford,Wales and London. The only salt water I have seen in 3 weeks was in Cardiff bay/Wales last week and as expected the water was a tad dirty!
Most of my travels are around the rivers like the Thames and Avon rivers and the Oxford and kent and Avon canals. Not to many yacht with masts!

Southace, are there 12 spark plug leads that I see on those last 2 photos, what is the configuration of those cylinders? At first, bearing in mind your travels, I thought it might be a Supermarine(Spitfire) related motor.

Greenwich marinetime museum, was really the only real boat on display! It's mostly all just interactive displays with videos and crap. I think by memory it was a aircraft motor v12 ? How's the 6 meter prop shaft!
