Hi there

Does anyone have experience, recommendations for faux teak and holly flooring?

Just bought a boat with carpet straight out of the '80s which I cannot live with .

Thanks

I will be using this on the swim board on my motor cruiser. It won't be for a few months yet though. I will keep you informed on how it goes. If you beat me to it, I'd be interested in your experience with it too.

I plan on removing the old teak and doing the prep work myself, but will get it professionally laid.

Hi Toph

There seems to be a few brands around and variations in price (= quality??).

Have you chosen a particular brand yet?

Not brands as such yet Trace, just companies. We do not have too many over here in Perth (that I have come across) that will come out and do the template then fit. I am leaning towards a company called Pure Decks and they are a distributor for Deck Armour products.

What about that vinyl timber planking stuff they sell at Bunnings? It's as heavy as hell but should be durable.

I have seen this on the Wish site. Go to the ' Wish' site ( www.wish.com ) and search Teak Decking. I have bought a number of things from this site and the price and quality have been amazing.
The below is from their site.

I think you'll like Brown EVA Foam Marine Boat Trunk Flooring Teakwood Decking Carpet Yacht Floor Mat(Size: 240cmx90cmx0.6cm). Add it to your wishlist!

Hi Selkie,
I got right into this a few years back, even to the point of getting samples from everyone. A couple of vendors wouldn't sell without them installing it, so that was easy to rule out if you want to do it yourself.
I did some dummy installs as tests using the samples, what I learnt was there is a fair bit in prep work in the laying out of a good pattern. Mostly it was the edging, I did one sample as a rectangle shape and put a edge (strip plank at 90 deg) only the short sides, and it looked really wrong. I then did the same but edged all 4 sides and radius' corners and it looked fantastic.

For a few weeks after that, I was cutting out strips of paper and sitting there like a pre-schooler moving shapes around!
There is a bit of difference between the different companies product, so it pays to pick one and do some research before moving on to the next vendor. You pick up common stuff as you go, so by the time you've done a few different vendors you start getting a feel for which one suits you best.
I'll see if I can dig up all my notes, I'm sorry I can't remember the names off the top of my head. My pick was a product from WA I remember that much.
There is a bunch of Youtube videos on each of the decent vendors from an installation point of view, so lots of info there!
Hope this helps mate,
SB

Before you buy, makes sure you get your hands on it. Some were stiff as boards, others were a lot softer. There was a cheap Korean one that when I left it out in the sun it was too hot to stand on!

Thanks Shaggy

That would be fabulous!!

I've been thinking similar things to you about actually seeing the product in the flesh before committing to a big amount and a project.

Also, putting it all together so the edges are pretty and not just lopped off. You are a genius, my friend!

Shaggy, you may actually know my new boat from your years with Intrusion. Wavesong belonged to the (now retired) slipmaster at WMYC.

Thanks mate

I had a drink aboard a 27 year old dunc the other night, the owner used cork tiles from Kmart and coated them in epoxy, looked a treat.

I'm with SA on the cork, nice under foot easy to cut to shape and stain ( if you want to do a mossaic ) , renewable resource, floats if the world goes bum up, has reasonable insulation property's. I've been playing with it a bit as you can proably tell, have not tried sealing it with epoxy, I sure it would glue ubeut but there's no doubt a mountain of products out there to do the job

Hi Selkie,
Is she as clean and tidy as she used to be? You could've eaten off the cockpit floor if It's the gentlemen I remember.

Hi DAMA

Another option. Thanks!

How is it for non-slip ability?

Yeah not too bad , the planks are separated with plastic spacers that tilers use for gouting spacers.and the sit very slightly proud above the plank which helps.
but then again there is very minimal heeling on our boat

That stuff looks good. Different sizes too but very heavy. My cabin sole would use very little so weight not so much a problem. I have that vinyl work shop stuff flooring at the moment And it's non slip. This stuff does not feel like it would be slippery. Off cuts would be good to insulate engine covers.

Only look at Commercial quality products.
More durable and usually more slip resistant.
I have had Karndean VG Bracken flooring in a good portion of my home for the last 9 years and it looks the same as the day we installed it!
