Went there from Sydney via Lord Howe in July a decade ago. A great way to go if you like 70kts plus wind and 10m plus swell. Next time I will definitely sneak up the coast high enough to escape the SW gales.
One we got in the trades it was a great trip and I loved New Caledonia. The place has one of the largest coral reef lagoons so you can cruise for weeks in sheltered water. Port Moselle was a nice place to stock up on stores and sample the great cafes. Good idea to practice your old high school french before you go though. And yes I agree with Chris take stormsails and a good drogue or two
