If you could buy whatever you wanted for a day sailor, on a trailer, easy and quick to set up and suitable for up to 4 adults.
What would you buy?

If you just want a daysailer the Farr is too big and heavy. Hartley Ts16 would do. Or similar trailer sailer on single axle trailer.

4 adults? Probably going to be dual axle.

I had a comet/nomad 20 and 3 adults was the comfortable limit in my opinion. But it depends on how cost you want to be.

Having a few T/S, any 23 foot and above would be minimum for 4 adults
Adventure 7, Aquarius / dual axel/, or something real nice
Macgregor-26./ single axel/.

What is your idea of a day sailer ?
Strictly speaking a day sailer is one without a cabin as such.

For some reason not as popular here as in the US.
We moved toward trailer sailers with cabin, bunks, head ,kitchen sink etc.

Yes, the Windrush Wildfire would be good. Only trouble is they are extremely scarce, especially on the East Coast.

Easy and quick to set up, and a crew of 4 is a little incompatible, unless all the crew participate in the rig/de-rig.

Status 19. Van de Stadt design. Absolute delight to sail. Mine was number 7 if you come across it.

I think the Haines Hunter Tramp (Farrier trimaran) makes to best day sailer. Comfortable, easy to sail, stable, reasonable turn of speed and easy to tow with a small car. You will pick one up for $8k - $13k, but be quick to put your money down for anything under $10k.

Yup, this is the classic day sailer. Designed to carry your large crew. LOA 19ft. Beam 7' 3''. Ballast 112kg. Designer E. van de Stadt who was renowned for good design.

Hey Valo there are literally hundreds. better set some parameters on what you are really looking for.
Cruiser/party boat (you don't want mainsheet traveller splitting cockpit)
race boat (definitely fractional rig)
cabin ,bunks.
Fibreglass hull
foam sandwich hull
multihull
swing keel/drop keel

Agree staus 19 and Farrier are both really good options.

The reason l said TS16 is that the cockpit is bigger than many larger TSs so just as likely to suit four.

Maybe not ideal but most cockpits arent suitable for 4 on a regular basis.

Another TS with a big cockpit is RL24. Light and easy to rig. Go better than vurtually any TS. Plenty around and cheap.

If you are just day sailing you take advantage of boats that offer limited accomodation.

For ease of set up be wary of masthead rigs as they are often too heavy. Fractional rigs are usually tapered and usually lighter.

For simplicity be wary of hydraulic swing keels and boats that need to be floated off trailers as you will spend you life dealing with wheelbearings and rust.

There is an art to getting the most from a trailable boat!

As I read post Valo is not looking for cheap.
Why not. Beal or Fareast or Farr or Melges or Ross and on and on.

Windrush Wildfire and Haines or Austac Tramp are hard to beat. RL 24 does the job too. I don't have experience of others.

Plenty of responses for you valo.

Your turn now.

Proper daysailers have less free board and a lot less weight than trailer sailers. In the early seventies I could not race the Status 19 in trailer sailing events because of the headroom rule they had at the time. There is a converted Tempest around here that is a great day sailer. Drop keel conversion on a Diamond is another alternative. Trapezing on a daysailer!

"If you could buy whatever you wanted for a day sailor, on a trailer"

I would get Andrew Denman to make me something from the swallow range like the bay raider 20 or maybe a bay cruiser 23 :

www.denmanmarine.com.au/bayraider-20-c37/

and then if I decided I really wanted something a bit sporty I would get a mini Transat - quite a bit of fun around the cans with a small team on flat water. There is one for sale that lives on a trailer in WA.

Not sure if this is what you want, but this is what I would buy suitable for 4 adults.

Depends on your budget off course. What price did you have in mind? I think the Macgregor 26S or26 D is a great boat .Not the X or the M. Being water ballast boats makes them easy to tow as well. Miles ahead in sailing performance than the big fat X and M Macgregors. Much nicer lines as well. I know because I have owned both types of Mac's. Also depends are you racing or cruising as there are a number of racing style day sailors to choose from. Can have complicated rigs. Another question will you always have a crew of four?Once you go for a crew of four your looking at fairly big boats usually with cabins. If its occasionally four but mostly two or even three the ball park changes quite a lot.

Hi All.

Thank you for your suggestions and replies. I haven't been able to log on for a few days. looks like admin has fixed it for me, as i'm back on.

I like the look of the tramp sailing boats. Plenty of room, look stable, look like they could take a bit of breeze being a Trymaran. Or am I wrong thinking this?

A cabin is not necessary. I am more interested in cockpit space. However a small one for a dunny wouldn't go astray.
I also need to be able to sail it solo.

I'll spend some time looking at all the suggestions.

Cheers
