Have you seen the new " followtheboat" youtube video, they had a trifold cockpit table made up for themselves that looked good, seemed like a person handy with tools could fabricate a similar one fairly easily

I made one the same as in the photo in the first post which would fold down.

I found it too big and replaced it with a fixed section 150mm wide secured to the pedestal which a larger hinged / removal table which can be attached.

So when sailing I store the table which is removed via two SS R-Clips (Whitworths 36627) which slide into the hinge. Half the hinge is on the fixed section attached to the pedestal and the other half on the underside of the table. The removable pin just replaces the fix pin that came with the hinge (Whitworths 42994)

At anchor I attached the table which can fold down back against the pedestal when not in use. The other end of the table is supported by a folding alum tube extension leg on to the deck.
The length of the table is determined by the height from the cockpit floor to the fixed section on the pedestal (so it can fold down). If you didn't want to have it fold down you could make it longer.

It gives me the best of both worlds ; clear deck when sailing reasonable size table when required at anchor.

The table is a stained piece of laminated pine which I got from Bunnings. ( almost looks like Teak) You can get it 450 or 600mm wide.

I'm using my cabin table for both places it's a little tight for room getting out of the cabin with it in place in the cockpit so I'll so a bit of trimming till it gives a bit more clearance

I charge between $30 to $50 dollars for my marine services to builld one myself would cost about the same as a production line built table. I would prefer to see one arrive in the post than .spend my labour and time to build one. I have enough on my plate as it is. Thanks for the replys guys I will just keep googling for a bargain around 700 to 1000 delivered.

Thanks to all the replies regarding raves on ozzie folding cockpit tables. It seems there's not much of a market even my friend Google can't find anything suitable. So the decision is made now I have cut my cockpit cushions down and made a nice lounge is to make a hand made solid timber table with compass rose and all the trimmings Which also will be removable. It will also multipurpose as a fish cleaning bench with a rubber protection mat I will manufacture! All I need now is a chunk of timber!

Instead of the stainless leg why not use a gas strut or 2 (ebay) coming out from the pedestal.

I used two on mine & it is so much better with no leg in the way & just folds down & held in place with a clip arrangement.

I've taken a liking to using gas struts - hold the bed up, the engine hatch etc. Makes it a lot easier to lift heavy things & then holds it in place :)

Photos below,
Working how to secure the fixed portion was the hard bit. I used SS tube and long bolts down from the rail on the pedestal to get the table at the correct height.
The LED light was a recent addition and gives a nice soft light to the cockpit. I also fitted a cig power socket under the fixed portion. This has been useful for air pumps and spot lights. The power feed comes up out of the pedestal tube and down the SS spacer tube to the power socket.

Wow perfect that's how I have designed mine but it's a Bunnings $44 plastic table which I will modifify the legs and cut it down just like your wooden version for now seabird until I find a nice chunk of timer like yours! Let's say it's a template for now!

I got the timber from Bunnings www.bunnings.com.au/our-range
You can get the pine board in 405mm or 600mm wide.

Apply one coat of Stain varnish in the colour of your choice
www.bunnings.com.au/cabot-s-250ml-gloss-oil-based-jarrah-stain-and-varnish_p1520250

Then 3 coats of cabot's gloss clear
www.bunnings.com.au/cabot-s-250ml-gloss-cabothane-clear-oil-based-timber-varnish_p1522164

light sand between the clear coats with 240 grit wet & dry

It didn't take long once I worked out how to secure the fixed section.
Note the hinges on the fixed section are set back flush with the front edge, so the hinges on the table need to extend forward slightly.

I did consider cup holders but in the end I purchased two of these plastic holders and mounted them to the 25mm pedestal tube, one facing the wheel the other facing the table. You can just see the base of them in the first photo.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Motorcycle-Beverage-Water-Bottle-Holder-Drink-Cup-Can-No-Tool-Easy-Mounting-AU-/162059198596?hash=item25bb7b2084

They work well, I use the one facing the table to hold a bottle of Red at night, gets it out of the way and is very secure. Nothing worst than spilling a bottle of Red in the cockpit . The standard drink bottle and stubby holder fit in nicely.
