My Bukh DV10ME has had an oil leak ever since I've had the boat. I've tried to nail it with no success to date.
I thought it was coming from the lift pump, so took that off and put a bit off sealant on an
otherwise good looking gasket. The leak was still there.
I then looked at the sump (which is where the oil looks like it's dripping from) tightened up
the studs (they were not loose). The leak was still there.
Craning my neck to get a look at the back of the engine it seems the leak could coming from
behind the part that the water pump and manual start is. The oil is black engine oil and only
drips about half a thimble full an hour, but it's annoying and I would like to fix it.
So what is behind that part of the engine that would leak and is it a matter of a new gasket
or what??????.
If your there HG. that pic of your engine with the flywheel off shows off your new pump and
the very place I think my leak is occurring, but it's behind that part.

There is a oil pipe going to the head maybe the copper washers that seal it
Or behind the cooling pump there is a seal that stops oil. Also water going the other way

Thanks HG I appreciate it. On sale at Aldi Saturday week is an inspection camera with an illuminated camera head
and 105cm of water proof flexible shaft just the job for looking in the anode or drain plug orifices to look
at scale buildup, and, in my case to look at the back of the engine to inspect the places I can't see.
$70, worth it do you think???.

Ive just got home a quick google as my Bukh manuals on the boat I just realized and I just swped out my pc which has no dvd player


I found this crusty photo on google there you can see the water pump drive and also a oil seal to prevent oil from coming out of the motor I would say you motor maybe leaking there .
There is two bolts that retain the water pump onto the motor remove those two bold and your hoses and it should come off.
If your doing this it might be an idea to buy a water pump kit and rebuild the water pump on the 6 bolt pump there is a chance water can get into the engine which is not a good idea
The later pumps have a drilling to let the water out

PM me if you would like my old 6 bolt pump its really no use to me its sitting on the boat Ill keep enough spare to rebuild my new one


The above rebuilt kit is not for a bukh but you can see the two seals they are fitted back to back so one stop oil from leaking the other water
Any bearing shop would have these seals the only difference in buying those seals and also if you buy a Johnston pum or kit is Bukh fit bronze springs in there water pump oil seals the other may off johnston might be stainless
Sam thinking about it the engine oil seal would be fine from any bearing shop you would have to measure the engine water pump drive shaft to get the I.D and the O.D. plus the width of the seal of the housing the spring will be on the engine side so its covered in oil . I think also there maybe a oil slinger fitted behind the seal to assist in keeping the oil away from the seal .
A sharp pointy thing might help in removing the seal from the housing plus a couple if small screw drivers. try not to distort the seal to much and damage it when removing it the bearing shop might be able to get enough from the old seal to measure up and identify a replacement

Hi samsturdy I had a leak in my dv20, it turned out to be the O ring part 15, page H 23 of the manual.

After a long time the O ring gets flattened to a square shape and leaks, if you lean over the back of the engine
with a bright light you should see the area wet with oil if that is the source of your leak.

Propwalk & HG. Thanks both, good info and pics HG as always. Prop, leaning over to see the back of my engine is an
impossibility which is why I'm considering purchasing an inspection camera. There is no water in the oil
which is a really good sign and there's a possibility HG that I may have a later water pump as the engine
has more modern fittings, like a spin on oil filter etc. The leak is not that bad that I can't live with it but
I always worry that it will suddenly get worse when I'm out out at sea and then I'm in big trouble. That's
why I want to find it and fix it. Yes Prop I have downloaded the manual and thanks for relating
that experience I'll look for that 0 ring. What do I need to do to change the 0 ring if I can't get to the back
of the engine is that a problem.?????

samsturdy, you will need to be able access the rear of the engine to change the anode, the O ring is only about 8" to the right of the anode brass cover.

Sounds like the O ring is OK.
