Can't help wondering about the mentality of doing something like this.
Fair enough if you can only afford a 25 foot boat rather than a 35 or 40 foot boat but I can't help feeling that 5.1 meters is just an absurd attempt to get into record books. The design of such a boat really has no practical value to anyone.
So when he lost the rudder was it just the blade or did he have a gaping hole from the shaft?
having covered 2500nm in this boat in huge seas if it was only taking on manageable water couldn't he have steered with a drogue? He admitted he had stacks of food and made his own water .
I have no doubt enough is enough and mentally want to get off.
Bill Hatfield wiped out his Mottle 33 at Cape Horn was washed overboard climbed back on board bailed the boat boarded up windows and limped into port at 78 years of age but I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of him he is one tough old man .
and he didn't write a book.
sold the Mottle flew home bought a Northshore 38 and ended up holding a record for sailing the world single handed the wrong way
I don't know. I think it's a bit like getting a tattoo. I wouldn't do it personally but it's not really harming anyone else.
Gutsy though.
