I happen to be coming to the Perth/Margaret River this weekend and see the forecast is for a strong westerly on Saturday.
Is this going to be kiteable if so when and where?
My smallest kite is 5m

TIA

Hey mate
You won't get much reply as most fellas down that way don't talk about spots much. Keeps the numptys away.

If you use google maps, you can see which bays and points should be ok in a westerly. If you look at the sea and swell forecast, you'll see the size expected is not going to be something to trifle with, so if you aren't used to kiting in solid swell (ie not just big chop, I mean 10 foot solid) then you should probably just check it out.
Must launch spots where I would think to kite are pretty tight, no room for error getting in and out, and solo kiting this weekend might not be a good idea given conditions. If you are very competent, I'd recommend going somewhere you think is likely to be good, and if you see kites up, join them. If not, consider whether it's worth it.
If competent but not used to swell, head up to Duns or busso for more side onshore and choppish water and dodge the bullets.
I'm interstate, so I can't offer to join!
Hope that helps. Take care
Maz

Hi Charliewest,

Here is a location guide that's easy to find on the Web from a local kite school down there: http://www.mrkiteandsail.com.au/KitesurfingFreerideLocations.aspx

As Mazdon pointed out Saturday will most likely be survival kiting down there. Swells are forecasted to reach 6 to 8m high and winds up to 100km/h (that's more than 50 knots) along with thunder, rain and possible hail : 210.8.186.60/wa/forecasts/leeuwin-coast.shtml

I even wonder if the locals would bother going out... You may not even have any room to setup the kite on the beaches in margs with seas this high

Be careful

Christian

Cheers guys! Looks like maybe bringing the kites may not be a great idea!! I'll check out that map for spots! - could be ok in flatwater if it's not super strong? Looks like our flight in on Friday night could get bumpy...
Maybe perth on Monday could be a go in the NW?
Where's a good beach to witness some monster waves rolling in? Dw I won't be going out

Some good advice here, Margaret river cops solid swells hence why the locals are a step above surfers,
Was down there last week, due to winds it's unlikely you'll upset the local surfers,
Be very aware of what's downwind not at where you intend to kite, I had a sweet little session at the beach south of breeze rd, also smiths might be worth a look, if it's all too heavy there's heaps to see and do
Go grab a bike at the hairy marron shed next to the river, great gear, cheap hire and fantastic mountain bike tracks,
Go hard then call in swings bar, n, restaurant approx 2 mins walk from the bike shed
For a guest beer and a pork belly slider from the tapas menu,
I've not had anything as good in my hands and mouth since I hit up a Thai brothel in Hannover in the 80s

Never leave your kites dude, Augusta is a sweet spot too, and a short drive from margs

Perth on the NW on Monday could be fun, lots of wind still around, and lots of left-over swell from this weekend.
Augusta river mouth area could possibly be kiteable, between fronts etc.
As for kiting the eastern side of marge, i.e. Dunsborough / Busso, it can be super gusty that side, due to the massive hill the wind has to get over before it gets to the beach.
Just roll-on down to Margs main-break to watch some crazy surf this weekend.

Haha, yeah, umm, I've got something on too. Sorry, maybe next time

Anyone else available to show our east coast mate around down there? It's gonna be good - bring your smallest kite and a tow board

The local windsurf crew and I got out yesterday and today around the Margarets area.
Yesterday was ballistic and today was fun.
No kites to be seen.
