Dear Wind Loving Cousins,

Due to the recent spate of Incidents in the Mandurah area, I have contacted the City of Mandurah with some ideas about erecting signs at the most popular Kiting Beaches in Mandurah, with the main purpose being to raise awareness levels about safe behaviour and to create safe conditions for all of us, and other water users.

It would be good for WAKSA to follow up, with your ideas, input etc. So that Kiters interests are represented.

Flake,

It's your sort of reply that makes me wonder why I bother taking the reconciliation approach. You wonder why kiters have such a bad reputation? It's no real wonder when people like you represent them.

Is Flake a true representation of the attitudes and ideas out there in the Kiting Fraternity?

I'm sure he's not because I know plenty of kiters who are nice reasonable blokes, and one of my very best friends is a kiter, I wouldn't do anything to jeopardise their interests.

When I meet the CEO of the City of Mandurah, do you really want me remember your attitude Flake, Maybe I'll print a copy of your response to my ideas, as well as my constructive ideas, and just show him the sort of attitudes we are up against, I'm sure WAKSA will love that!

Thanx for the mature response!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I get an interview or response from Mark Newman CEO of City of Mandurah, I'll contact WAKSA, and see if you guys can be invited along and represented.

WAKSA is working on making some standard signs that can be put up in areas where there are concerns .
We are in the process of getting the website up , and should have something in 2 weeks .
It sounds like you are going to a bit of effort and it would be great if you could come to our next meeting and outline exactly what is happening down there .
At this point WAKSA is still only a handfull of volunteers trying to protect and advance the sport for all .
We need constructive input from as many people as possible so we can go in the direction the majority wants .

Hey Hardman,

I've been thinking of going down to mandurah for a kite sever times this winter, but have no idea about local hazards / precautions to take.

Can you suggest some areas to go / not to go because of hazards or because of people enjoying the beach and not wanting to be annoyed by ppl like flake.

What has happened recently down in Mandurah that you have felt the need to post this?

I think hardman is was propted to do something after a Kiter spent the better part of an afternoon crashing his kite on the beach and rigging area at Geeries. It was 35knts and the guy looked like he was totally out of control. I was going to tell him but then he packed up (I thought). Then he rigged up again and was crashing his kite on the dunes. I am a kiter as well as a windsurfer so I have nothing against kiters (of windsurfers), I just got kind of annoyed me that this guy was being so daft.
I think Signs are a good idea 'caus geeries is not really an ideal spot for inexperienced kiters (narrow beach and waves, reef, drift etc.
Thats what I rekn anyway.

Dear WAKSA Members,

To update you on the response by the City of Mandurah, I ‘ll give a brief summary of my discussions with them and the local Kiters in the area.

Discussions with Local Kiters:

I had not received a reply to my letter from the City of Mandurah and rumours had been circulating that someone had written to the City of Mandurah complaining about Kiting and asking to have it banned. This may or may not have been the case by someone else, however, I decided to approach the local kiters about what I had written in a letter to council.

I approached and informed them (the local kiters) I had written a letter to the Mandurah Council advocating an education safety program through signage and liaison with WAKSA.

Local Kiters stated their objections to me about the matter and what they actually wished for. I stated I would try and honour their wishes.

City of Mandurah reply to my request:

The City of Mandurah wrote to me eventually, and invited me to telephone them.

I rang and spoke with a City of Mandurah Officer, and informed him that the local kiters were not keen on signage on their beaches, and that I also personally wished to withdraw my request that signage be posted.

The City of Mandurah officer acknowledged my request, stating that signage was not his preference either.

He also stated that several coastal councils were forming a working party to look at the issue, and their main approach would be educational.

He also stated that WAKSA would be consulted. I affirmed that WAKSA seemed to be a professional, ethical and proactive organisation.
