Should a beginner go out and buy this kite as a first kite or is it a little bit too fast??
it's more an advanced kite bro. In that I mean when you first learn you stack your kite a lot, into shore, water, rocks or whatever. (also a 9 isn't a good choice as its prob too small for learning on) My first kite was a 2007 switchblade 12 mtr and i got it nearly new. I learnt over in Indo and by the time I had got myself to a good standard (4 months) the thing was looking worse for wear. small tears along the leading edge and now it's sitting in a mates garage in north brissy and probably will just gather dust. The Wainman Smokes's are a awesome piece of kit, incredibly fast turning and straight line speed. You can tune them up to turn slow and heaps fast too. Also jump more vertical or floating horizontal. Expensive also for a first learners kite. My advice is buy something secondhand like a switchblade or SS rev or Turbo2 to start on. Lots of them around on seabreeze buy and sell and they both are a forgiving kite. You want something stable, easy relaunch and reliable. I've had 2 switchys and they have done me well and have been reliable. Your going to crash and punish your first kite, when you get good or confident in 6-12 montrhs you can upgrade and get your new kite. When you feel like you have progressed and your riding is getting better then you will realise that you want more from your kite. That's when you start deciding if you want one of the high performance kites. Best thing is to hit your shop you go to and ask them to demo different ones. Get 2 or 3 for a weekend and ride em. It's the only way you will know/feel what is the right one for you. Iv'e tried quite a few kites and for me the wainman is a cut above anything I have rode. I'm off to Boracay Island Phillipines with my mates next week and they are taking 2 or 3 kites each. I'm just taking my wainman 9 as I know how well it rides in everything from 13 knots up to 30 knots. My advice is that if a shop is trying to push a certain brand on you then forget it. They want the sale regardless of the BS they spin you. Do your reasearch, hit the shops, talk to riders/team riders and look on the water for someone who is ripping it up. Not just the ones cruising up and down doing the same old stuff. Go speak with them and ask them which kites are nice and why.
