Hey Everyone,
I have just purchased a few kites and a board for myself and was wanting to know where the best geographical place to learn would be?
Whether it be a dam or seaside? I live a lot closer to dams at the moment tho am not worried about travel.
Also where would be the best place to start in the way of lessons? Ei can anyone refer? Or would anyone like to come with for a day as I am a quick learner?
Cheers in advance for the help!!

fair old drive from helidon !
anywhere safe for bystanders , yourself and your kite is good to learn [in that order] also location which is easy to walk back upwind [with kite flying]
sandgate would be good to learn at
Cheers dafunk! So on my own would be alright to start? I have watched heaps of "how to" videos, so am pretty confident when it comes to rigging the kite and have a fair idea on launch and steer (obviously having a go will be better)
When you say "up wind" that means you would walk the same way the wind is blowing?
Also I have a 7m, 2x8m and a 10m kite. What would be the best to start? I caught that the bigger the faster but the smaller the quicker reaction? Would I be best to start in the middle?
Cheers
Hi Tmy, it would be a good idea to go and get professional lessons. I don't want to put you off but welcome you to the sport but please appreciate Kiteboarding Kites are seriously powerfull and can cause harm very easily to the untrained. If you value your health and safety also the investment you have made in your gear from saving it from damage I suggest to get lessons. Inland dams are not a good place to start for the inexperienced as there are a lot of variables and dynamics of the location to consider. Maybe bayside Brisbane might be a better location for you to commence in Kiting. There are some very competant Kite Schools there and the place to begin would be to make a few enquiries at the Kite Shops there.
Thanks Lostinspace for the feed back. I will definitely follow up on getting a lesson. I might try google for some quotes and go from there.
Cheers all for the feedback. Much appreciated :-)
how do you go landboarding and what size style kite do you use ? you should still need lessons on safety and self rescues etc .
I have a 10 a 7 and 2 8's. all airbrush brand and a flying objects board. Have surfed and wake boarded before and have flown a stunt kite but guessing combining the lot will be different.
because your so far inland ,big oval + landboarding with a small foil\trainer kite would be fun , STILL BE CAREFULL !
No worries will be careful. Have a few dams very close to my place. Also have a paddock at my back door so I thought that would be good to get a feel for the kite.
Cheers for your input dafunk.
Hi again Tmy, trainer kites get trashed in a fairly short period of time as they are slammed into the ground quite regularly by the inexperience. Hence part of the justification of Kite Schools and Professional Instructors chaging what they do for Lessons. Very few trainer kites are sold second hand and if they are you should be critical and carefull as to the integrity of the item you would be buying. If you are after a training kite it would IMHO be best if it was new and sourced from a reputable Kite Shop once again ask them for advice on what your intending to do to be matched with the right product for the right circumstance, ie; if you were intending on it being for landboarding and sized according to your weight, build, experience and conditions you were intending to fly it in. Most have online ordering facilities if need be. Hope the information is of benefit to you. Please keep in mind there is no substitute for professional lessons even with a trainer kite in getting started. Fly safe and Cheers! ![]()
trainer kite = 1.5m foil kite no lessons needed for this one ,just remember the safety
foil kite designed for land use
about 3-5 meter on handles or a bar for starters
care needed with these as they are powerfulll !!
your inflatables can be used on the landboard
big chance of punctures
know and practise the safety systems in a controlled situation
wear a helmut , start in light winds only .
do more research online
get lessons
Thanks all for your info. Will definitely get some lessons underway. Has anyone heard of Moreton Bay Kiting? They seem to be reasonably close to me. Or Noosa Kitesurfing? They are reasonable on price and I'm at the coast once a month.
Any other recommendations would be appreciated.
Anything that will stop you loosing your house is a good investment.
Membership also let's you join in with seqka activities and events too.
Have a look at Sunshine Coast Kitesurfing in Cotton Tree, they have a range of different kitesurfing lessons, even if you only get a refresher lesson, they give you the opportunity to kite while there teaching, and they will keep an eye on you aswell and give you some tips if needed.
They are the ones I've been looking for on the web as I seen the store last week when I was at the coast and I frequent that part of the coast. Cheers. I will give them a call tomorrow to see what they recommend.
Also that membership sounds good.
