Hi guys,

Im hoping you can help me out. I'm flying to the Goldie later this month and am wondering if I should bring any kite gear.

1. Should I bother?
2. If I should where are the best places to kite this time of year? I like all conditions so I'm easy but ride a twinny.
3. What kite sizes if I could only take two and a twintip.

I'm bringing my dad and thinking of getting him some lessons, any recommendations on schools?

Thanks in advance.

Eh noodles,

Our regular wind season here on the Goldy runs from September through to March dependant on if it's a wet Summer here, then we get less wind due to inland trough systems and moisture drawn into the atmosphere from warm water currents plays havoc with the wind as it did this year past last Christmas onwards. We do still get reasonable winds outside those times of the year just not as frequent and it can be a real hit and miss affair. At this time of year the winds are predominantly South through to South East Winds with a few South Westers thrown in for good measure, driven all the way up the East Coast from? "you guessed it, Viccy", apart from East Coast Lows that may develop from time to time. As you could imagine the winds have quite a hike to make it here to the GC, hence being hit and miss.

1. Should you bother - if you are only here for 2 days you would want to check the forecast on Seabreeze here for the Goldy to see if it is worth your while a couple of days out from flying, if that is how you are getting here, and booking extra luggage at that time if things are looking favourable.

2. Best places to Kite - There is really only two main places for Flatwater Kiting being Kfc's at Len Fox Park, Loders Creek, Labrador and the other being Shearwater Esplanade, Runaway Bay. For Surf Kiting there are Kilometres of beach front. Just look for where there maybe some Kiters and get the low down on that spot. Avoid kiting around out in front or near Surfers Paradise main hub or same around Kurrawa Surf Club at Broadbeach and keep away from Flag Areas. Also there is a no go Zone for Kiting from Balinga Beach up to Tugan adjacent the Airport. Avoid headlands that will wind shadow Southerly winds and you should be ok. Generally you will find there is a pretty good scene here and most Local Kiters are known to be a pretty friendly bunch so don't be afraid to get to know them. Up on the left hand corner of this QLD Forum Page there should be a link to click on that will bring up a map of locations to Kite.

3. What kite sizes? - the winds available to Kite could be anything but more than likely winds that your used to Kiting in Viccy. Once again check the forecast a couple of days out from arrival. If its light wind then you will possibly need a light wind Kite and a moderate wind Kite for a two Kite quiver to bring or if strong winds are forecast then you might be best to bring a strong wind kite and a moderate wind kite.

Hi Lostinspace,

thanks for for the info. It might not be worth the effort but the water will be warmer than vic so I'll keep my eye on the forecast.

Cheers

Hey Noodles,

Spacedude forgot to mention he is a qualified IKO instructor.....
If you can't already tell by his reply, he is very thorough and will have your dad up and going in no time......

Water temp is a balmy 22 degrees at the mo, and I always take kit with me when traveling to coastal destinations
