Hey all,

I am heading to Rainbow beach to camp with a few mates over the new years period 30th Dec till the 3rd Jan. Will be taking my kites and praying for wind as this week has been **** .

I'm hoping a mate or 2 will be keen to take their 4x4 up to DI point if its northerlies. If its southerlies where is there to go? Inskip? I've never seen the kite spot at Inskip, is it where I have circled on the picture below? also where i have put a Question mark is that any good for northerlies if I cant get out in a 4x4 to DI? Not liking the fact there is a massive channel through Fraser and Inskip. Have heard Shark stories. Is the spot at Inskip shallow?

Anything I should know about the right time to kite these spots in terms of tide?

I seem to remember from last time i was there that the whole stretch of ocean from the main beach at Rainbow all the way to DI point didn't have any surf does it normally have surf? I also seem to remember it was fairly shallow quite a way out?

Anyone on here going to be up there kiting at the same time?

Cheers

The area circled is the spot for in-skip. Works sw thru to se. Flat water out to sandbars, don't go fraser side of point.

I have memories as a newb needing to release my kite in this area after a line/leash twist so my kite drifted alone out into that
deep channel, as I certainly didn't want to still be attached. The barge kindly scooped my kite up- thanks guys.....they got their six pack..

Where you got that ? that would also be a SE area to kite...down-winder, I think its too sheltered for a northerly there...need to go the south side
of Rainbow if Northly wind.

Rainbow to DI has surf if "surfs up" but can be flat on occasions.

Its all a nice area, especially if get lucky with winds, swell and tides but can be hit and miss....so good luck

Hey Sandblaster,

Thanks for the reply. Glad I got the spot at inskip right, I'm guessing that photo above is of it at high tide and more sand is exposed mid to low tide.
Thanks for the input, fingers crossed for wind!

Hi Pezzy, the only thing I can add is you can launch back inside around 150 meters inside the point when its blowing se, some good flat water, though small area to launch with plenty of users at times on the beach. If it blows nth like its probably going to for the next few days you can kite where your question mark is, but the real gem is up at di if it blows well, anything with north in it will do it.
Weekend is looking like a low is gunna pop off the coast and give us all a good wave outside , well be up there sat sun mon with boards and kites.

I rate Double island as one of the greatest places to kite . It has the most relaxed feel to it as it is an adventure to get there and the water is as flat as you can get. The above pics were from a trip about a month ago.
