Hey guys,

On this post im going to point out some of the places in Bowen that are ripe with potential to have a mad sesh on. Provided there is plenty of wind, almost everywhere here is kitable, but if you want to find the rest of your fellow kiters; there are two most commonly used beaches.

The first of which is the Don River mouth. Which is located in Queensbeach on the northern side of town.

DON MOUTH

This is my personal favorite beach.
On an ESE to E this beach really is awesome. If you manage to get here on low tide there are a few flat water lagoons you can really have some fun in. once you get out past the small sandbar, its open water with bigger waves and chop. Good fun if you like ramping off them for some extra height on your jumps.
So in summary
PROS: Flat water lagoons and nice waves out further. Plenty of room. Can be kited on at high or low tide without being a chore.
CONS: High tide can be a nightmare if the wind isnt all that strong as there is lots of driftwood along the shoreline, as well as people walking along the beach. Unless you have competent upwind skill stay away from the actual mouth on an incoming tide, as a few people have gotten stuck on the other side (including me) and trust me, ITS NOT WORTH IT.

Okay now onto the next spot

This is the most used beach I would say and it is the Front Beach.
Its located along Santa Barbara Pd and there is a nice little grassy spot to set your gear up as well as tables and chairs.

If theres wind, this will usually be the place you will see the kites up in the air. A SE wind is directly onshore here. And from about Jan till August most of the time its SE. Its a perfect beach to learn on.
There is also a shop located on the back of the Sailing Club run by Martin from Kiteboarding Australia. Where he runs lessons and sells some gear (mainly Ozone). You get a good crowd down there on a windy day and there is always someone willing to help you launch/land. Riteo so lets get to the good/bad points

PROS: Good allround beach. Kite shop conviently placed. Grassy areas to setup or pack up your gear. Wind socks so you can see if its even worth pulling up. Not far to the pub (jokes)
CONS: On lighter winds that aren't SE its really easy to get stuck in the creek down the end if your upwind skill isn't upto par. On lowest tide It can be quite a walk to the water. On 3/4 tide there are alot of sandbars to keep an eye out for.

Thats about the short of it. I will continue to add posts on this blog with any new events and pics I get.

Hi Angry Phil,
I have just had a great discussion with i think it was martin from KA about the best spots around there. I'm coming up on the 6th Marchfor work and thinking about hanging around for a few days to kite..
Do you think the wind will be up by then? Have you ever done a day trip to Whitehaven to kite?
I'm from the Gold Coast and really keen to come up and get stuck into some new spots.. Sounds really good.
It would be great to hear from you with your thoughts.
Jason
