Try Lake Cootharabah. It can be a little gusty but is shallow for ages and is a pretty hard place to get into trouble. Just get someone to walk out a bit to launch you away from the tree line.

i say you are talking woodgate . yep not bad in northerly or easterlys but has small waves 2-3 foot in most places there so for learning i would say hervey bay for flat water the island frazer takes all out waves away .dont get me wrong we get a lot of wind slop waves when it is up but in the 10-13 kn range we are pretty smooth .Talk to the kitesurf shops at noosa coolum they will get you on a great spots.

Woodgate is about an hour north of Hervey Bay. If the winds are decent, Hervey Bay is one of the best places to learn. You can kite anything from a S to NW. There are no hazards to speak of and when the tide is in the bottom half and the sandbars get expsosed, the water flattens off nicely. I was at Sandgate on the weekend, wind was ordinary and you couldn't kite for all the lessons going on. Got back to the Bay on Monday and the SE's were perfect. Headed to the Pier and was the only one on the water besides Enzo giving a lesson, doesn't get any better. You can keep your "popular" spots, I'd take the Bay over any of them.

Have to agree with BurkeyBoy and suface2air, Hervey Bay is a great place to learn. I am still very much a learner and I normally only kite with suface, where we kite there is normally no one else around kiters or people so you feel a lot more confident and relax a little more.

is Noosa river not a great place for beginners? Im heading up that way myself soon and heard rave reviews about Noosa and lake Weyba??? is it worth the extra drive to hervey bay?

Noosa rivermouth has a fierce outgoing tide and you must be a proficient body dragger to survive in the crowd there.

Not a good place for a beginner to piss off the locals!!

BWD is right about the river mouth. Lake Webya can be a good spot for learning but the wind has to be right, check with the boys at Adventuresport Kitesurf in Noosaville. It's over a 2hr drive to Hervey Bay, and if the wind is good and the tides are right, you would find it ideal for learning and beyond. Long return trip if it doesn't blow though
