What are some good places to do a downwinder run as a newbie, thinking Kirra to Tugun beach and maybe KFC to Shearwater
like 1kj said shear to kfc or the other way would be ok but maybe not perfect for a beginner. For a beginner sandgate to brighton will be a lot easier with the shallow water and room for error at low tide and little swell (worst case pull safety, walk in, wrap your kite in your harness and walk to your car). Wouldnt recommend the open beaches unless with a mate or until you are comfortable in the waves very different to flats at the start
Providing the winds suit both are good, careful of those boats and all those pros at KFC
Is this one of the pros you speak of from KFC?
If so, give him plenty of room.........
He is one mean mofo

What are the Best wind Directions for shearwater and main beach?
Shearwater - Every direction works except for straight west and nw is a bit sketchy. Shearwater is also heavily affected by the tide and boat traffic.
Main Beach - N to ne and se work best.
If you are learning and do go to the surf, please go to the north of Main beach towards the spit and stay well clear of any flagged areas. A few of our favorite spots are under scrutiny at the moment and face the very real prospect of bans being imposed
