OK Guys before I get Hammered here I'm not Fat I'm Just big Boned ![]()
I'm new to the sport and have booked lessons for next week with Jason down at Brighton, what i'm chasing is firsthand experience from the big boys that Kitesurf.
What worked the best for you guys ?
Did you guys buy a board that you could develop into say a 136-140 or did you use a 6ft mal ?
I'm going to head towards a 11-13m Kite depending on what feels good for me but i'm more than intrested on what worked for you guys.
Will be hanging around the sandgate area as I live local to there.
I'm working on braking out of the 100 club 2kg to go wahoo double figures again.
anyway any advice would be appriciated.
Cheers
Richard
PS: i shiftwork so would be intrested in catching up with any other poor souls looking for midweek partners!
Yeah bro I know where ya coming from I two am 102kg and I am new to the sport. I am useing a 135x44cm Crazyfly Raptor board and it works for me, "a little wide" I hear you say, are yes but I can get plaining in light winds before I would if I were on anything smaller.
I have tryed a few smaller boards and they work fine so long as their is plenty of wind. The kite that I use is a 10m and 12m Cabrinha Switchblade which tends to have a bit more power than some of the others, a 14m would be a great kite to have in your pack to start with as well.
Good luck, cheers Marcus
Thanx Marcus,
Heading out today "Wind permiting" to get wet and have a laugh.
I have been looking at boards around the size you mentioned, even up to a 138-44.
I have now learnt that say a 138-44 with a 11-12m kite is simular to a 135-40 with a 12-13m kite.
hope to get a feel for it, trying to get that one kite for most conditions. Say 15-25knts.
The riders at sandgate/brighton have been very helpful. if Jason and his crew had charged me for advice to date I would have already bought a new kite :)
thanks again
Richard
Hi mate. You are not alone at 100kg.
I started with a 2008 13 m Bandit and it was the best thing for me. It pulls like a tennager and is solid and stable as a rock. Second best thing I bought was a nobile 666 ext 139 x 46 after riding your mate Jason's up north last Easter. The EXT is a big boys weapon as it will have some performance for a big guy once the wind does kick a little. I did however change the stock fins from 55 to some m8 30's to loosen it up a touch and it worked a treat. What you must remember is that boards are typically not designed for 100kg guys so the flex in the board once riding can differ a great deal from that which was originally designed for the board. Like a harness you simply have to ride a multitude of boards before you find one you like.
Evolution from there is to buy a second board for when the wind picks up so you can channel the power of the larger kite through your frame and stay in control on the water. Changing boards in this scenario can be better than changing kites.
I have upgraded my 13 Bandit to, you guessed it, a new 13 m B3 Bandit but my quiver also consists of a 10m bandit dos which is my favourite kite. This is a sweet quiver combination for a 100kg bloke. My Boards are a nobile 666 ext and a 133 jimmy lewis. With the 13 Bandit and the Nobile EXT I'm staying out when others are on the beach complaining about the lack of wind. I do however, try and ride my 10m on the EXT in lighter winds so when the wind does kick I can change straight to the jimmy lewis.
May spoil myself with a 8 m Bandit dos if one is going cheap cause my wife has her eyes on my 10 and but really the 10m will handle the top end range of most of my kiting.
Hope this helps.
Well I'm not sure what the official distance to stay upright in the water is before you are classed as a kitesurfer but today it was far enough to be hooked ![]()
Why pay money at a chiro when you can have your spine cracked in every angle when learning to water start.![]()
But what the hell i'm up and going, Last lesson tomorrow, hopefully will learn what to do once i'm up![]()
Thanks for the great advice guys, I ended up with the North XRide board 140-41.5 and Jason fixed me up with one of his ex school Revolt 11m. More than enough grunt for me to get myself in and out of trouble atm.
Hope to catch up at brighton/sandgate someday.
cheers
Richard
Thanks to Jason and his crew couldn't of been more helpfull, any newbies chasing some honest advice you wont be wasting a trip heading down to BrisKites ![]()
Dear Diary today i went kitesurfing for my final lesson, up and going in no time,
The wind picked up and was between 15-20 knts. Any other large boned gents out still trying to decide on kite size, the 11m revolt had more than enough grunt to drag my arse out of the water.
May not of been as pretty as some but worked for me, managed to actually park the kite and lean into harness the full length of the beach, "**** I wish i could turn "
Having a **** load of fun and totally hooked.
Thanks again
Richard
