Hi Guys
I've just about finished my lessons. One to go!!! I've got myself a new kite, 12m Cult, and now need to find a board thats good for a year or two (if I don't lose it). I've been advised to get a second hand board!
I don't really have a riding style preference at the minute and I weigh 79kgs.
Any help on type, size and brand would be appreciated. Also what's your views on beginners using leashes.
Cheers![]()
There is nothing better than a Spleene door 164. This board is great and you will ride it even when you become better because it is one of the best light wind boards! You can still plane when others have to walk on the beach. With a cult 12 it should bring you on the board with some experience with 10 knots or less and up to 20-25 knots.
Ask Ian Young for a testride.
Cheers

i got an Orange bolt Board for $290 blank, $390 with pads and straps, $490 fins as well
brand new made to your size(120, 128, 134, 138) with carbon or with out
any pics you want and your name in layed if you like
our boards are primo and easy to get out and on top of the water due to the way we make em. they are much lighter than most(pop out of water quicker and get planing) but still strong using uni-direction glass or carbon fibre
if you want to have a go give me (see my details) or dave(0404 288882) a call
for a go were in geelong
or at mambo in a few weeks
Try using an old surfboard also as you will gain some skills like toe side and using it in waves, plus they are very cheap and will get you going very easy.
Hey,
Thanks for all your help guys....I've found out that I can hire a floaty board for $30 a week which will be good until I've got the hang of standing up etc. Then I'll see about getting a second hand board around 140 long for a year.

Try to find a 140cm Liquid Force WLF. The 2008 WLF retails from $879 incl GST.
If you can find someone who will part with a second hand one grab it. They are awesome for learning and taking you through to an intermediate level of riding for your body weight. Really good resale value.
If you have any questions or would like to know who you’re local Liquid Force Dealer is, please feel free to contact me.
rubbish---find the money and buy yourself a decent board. an oversized board will only hold you back in the long run. If the board is too long , you can't sink in the edge if you get overpowered and your edge is your brakes!!!
something 132 x 39 would be absolutely perfect. UnderGround FLX, Cardboards, Slingshot, whatever, Buy a great board and you will never sell it!!!!!!!!!! (thats why you cant find a 2nd hand one ).
.
oh yeah,, and a leash will kill you.
body dragging is a piece of cake. just another simple skill for you to learn.
(write your name and number on your board)
welcome to kitesurfing!!!!!!!!
dont buy something too big, if you do, you will just be buying a new board 6 months from now. I learned on a best float 133x43 which was good for my size (100kg). Have a look at a board around 130-135cm x 40-41, maybe a bit smaller if you kite in stronger conditions. A smaller board will slightly increase the learning curve but will be better for you in the long run.
buy a cardboard from cardboarding.com if you gonna go new. well priced and can add your mobile or seabreeze alias in with the custom graphics that you can also choose from. plus the guys there can make a board to suit. so ask them what's good for your size.
as most have said...don't go too long ...or made too large overall you will grow out quickly
Cheers for the frankness of your replies. A leash is definitely off the menu. As for the board......well I'm not sure what to do for the best. I guess a view demos after I've got the hang of getting up on my feet will help quite alot!! ![]()
welcome to the sport mate.. you weigh pretty close to what i do and i strongly suggest along witha few other ppl that have already posted to look for something between 130 - 136x39-42 because anything bigger will just be a waste of time. as soon as u get up and riding a bigger board will just hold you back so ul pretty much be looking for a new board again in 2 weeks! especially seeing as your in WA where the average wind is normally round 18+ a big board will be pretty hard to ride in those conditions.
If you are in Brisbane and purchase 'a' board from us, you can borrow a large board say a Proof 151 to learn on, then swap it for a WLF 140, then perhaps a recoil 136 if required..... and finally onto your ultimate size board. All the swappings are free and at your own time. All you pay is the board you purchase from us. How is that for customer service? All our loan boards are 2008 models too. Offer subject to availability and conditions.
Gambo,
I see you're also from WA. When I started kiting in the 05/06 season I started with a 12m Gaastra and an Underground FLX 142. I am 6'2" and weigh 85kgs. I bought an FLX 128 as my high wind board (it's much easier to come in and change boards rather than drop your kite and blow up a new one if conditions pick up or drop off a little). I still ride these boards more than any of the others I have picked up since. I wouldn't personallly go any bigger than about this size because in WA it will be too big once you develop your board-riding skills and you'll feel like you're trying to ride on a small boat as opposed to a board.

You dont have to have a big board to learn on, i learnt on a slingshot sx 122...
Just get whatever size you think you will want in the long run and it will be fine.
ok, depends if your an old codger who is scared of hights or not. if you are; the spleen door or some other hideously huge and limiting board will do for you ![]()
but if your like a normal person get something around 125-135 second hand or 130-135 new. make sure you get one that is light, has good reviews on some of the forums and has pads/straps that suit your feet.
definitely shop around as value for money is way better at some shops as to others [obviously not going to name names].
you dont need to buy a learners board, as unchained said; he was up and riding a 122 as his first board quick enough [3 hours on water max before going upwind on his good side] you can just hire the fat board in the mean time.
also you have a rather big kite...

Hey guys
I'm also just giving the sport a nudge...
I'm only 73kg. Ijust bought a crossbow 9 and am looking for a board to get me going and hopefully keep me happy for a year or so...
Thanks for your input
ONCE again.. not a very hard choice.. anything between 130 - 136cm x 38 - 42 wide.. a little bit of flex helps a bit aswell.. just to soften up the ride ![]()
nah anything bigger then 136 just holds u back after u get past the point of getting up on the baord and riding.. if ur not looking into progressing trick wise then up to mayb 140 will be alright
