G'day all,

I would love your opinions on the cardboard Wave board. Been thinking about this one for ages and wondered if it is any good, especially if your heavy dude!

cheers,

Robbie

Hey Robbie,
Ask Dan to scale up to 160cm for your hugeness.
148cm planes easily for 90kg but you aren't 90kg.
Some days I wish I was as big as you!

... damn forcasts hey Eppo, they get us too in the exact same way!

Hey N8, when you mean scaled up to 160cm do you also mean the width too is scaled up? I figured the length was ok but the width was abit narrow for my hugeness. When winds are around 15+, I regularllly use a 138 x 43 with no problems so I some how figured that 148 cm is enough, but then again the Cardboard wave is not a twin tip too and has the rounder outline compared to my North Sky!

Does the Wave like a bit of power behind it. Tone has a 144cm Hammer and he says that it needs heaps of power compared to his other twin tips, thats why I was wondering if the cardboard wave was the same and needed power to bring out its performance?!

Other end of the scale, if its bigger, would it get over powered or feel big when the wind does come in! Mind you, Tone has been out in same wind when I'm lit on small kite (Gaz on 9m) with a 6'1" surfboard with no problems!

cheers,

Robbie

Yep I have tried it. I am at 115kgs it gets going similar wind to the 136*41 freeride probally, the wave has just a touch more lower end. I ended up with the 136 FR but sort of wished I had got the wave...

Rides well both ways trucks upwind, jumps well, but you do know its 148 long. Rides waves well has a very carvy outline and the bigger fins help in the fly follow and slash style waveriding.

cheers

Hey Robbie,
If you want it to "surf" during micro seconds when line tension is low, definitely scale it up.
Your height will give you enough leverage over a 160cm board to handle any wind strength. 160 isnt much bigger. Its approximately 6cm extra at each end if you look at a ruler that's not much at all.
Ask for alittle wider too. But don't go over 45cm wide.

Its actually faster riding it backwards off the nose. Better pop too cause of the square out line. Makes it easy jumping masses of white water and getting out of the sh-t quick.

The Squash tail has a different characteristic to a square TT shape. It sinks and grips turns. Good for hanging on through fast bottom turns. The board carries speed through the bottom turn and will help take you back the top of the wave.

Even though the 8cm Thruster fins are small it tracks well when ridden fast and flat. The Double concave/Vee helps track the board comfortable and straight. Normal TT boards dont like to ride flat in a straight line.

You've got everything else, Just get one

... to be honest I'm having a great time with my North Sky 138 in our waves and like the fact that it doesn't feel big, so my worry is that the Cardboard will feel long or big, especially at 160cm. I can carve on the Sky but wondered if the Card Wave will have more too it and get me closer to a surfboard but with out the constraints of a surfboard. I can occasionally get a nice carve and even a lip slash if I'm in the mood, if the cardboard can do this and then some, better than my North Sky then I'm very interested!!

cheers,

Robbie

ps is the rocker the same thoughout the board or different from nose to tail?

From Darren AKS....

148 WAVE
The Mutant is a real piece of work and is not quite as full on as previous mutants of yester year. The plan shape is symmetrical so the board itself has no bias to one end or the other. The fins however make the difference. Small 80mm surf style fins in a thruster setup give the board it's one way bias with the 50mm wake style fins on the nose giving control when riding backwards.

I originally set up the footstraps up with a natural stance bias but after riding it, have decided to put the straps back symmetrically. It is basically a twin tip that needs to be ridden as such but has surf fins for added grip and strong tucked tail outline for carving in waves. The board rides beautifully in both directions with no problems of the fins catching when riding backwards.

This may not be the ideal board if you live in flat or choppy water, but if you live close to a wave that you ride regularly, this is a strong contender for those that love versatility of a twin tip but with more performance for wave riding. The Wave 148 would also make a fantastic downwinder board for the likes of City beach to Scarborough and beyond, smashing waves all the way down. The bi directionality of the board allows you to just reverse direction to rest your back leg or to quickly change direction and get out of dutch should you suddenly find yourself about to be mowed down by a big close out set.

If you like whacking waves and your twin tip isn't really cutting it, the Wave 148 is the key. Practically unbreakable and the ability to boost and loop it as well as smash waves makes it very practical for riders loving twinnys in surf locations. An excellent alternative to lovers of the Airush Hammer as it does all the Hammer does, but also goes upwind well and needs less power.

Scoped one in the AKS shop today.

I don't normally get hot n bothered over a board but this unit had me salivating.

Like the extra length/width and the smoove double concave looks good. Same for rails and tails.

Looks like a board built to work brilliantly at it's purpose - not fit a perception of what twin tips should be (ie short and not too wide) if you know what i mean.

Would really like to try one out but bought a whopin great tent today so have to excercise caution when around shiny kewl new stuff at the mo.

EDIT:

Exactly what i love about TTs in mushy waves plus fun pushing your forehand and backhand sprays for variation.

BTW I ride a 151 x 43 with similar outlines as the wave and after leaving my 141 behind a few times 151cm does not feel too big or two long at all. The extra planing between sections of mush is worth every cm.

... yesterday, we had a good session with lighter winds and over head waves so I took out my Underground 144 x 46 and while "carving around" I had the above comments running around my head and after and hour I came to the conclusion that 160 cm wouldn't be too big for me and our tradionally lower winds!

Hey Eppo, had a chance to try it yet?

The rocker is symmetrical. So it will ride like a TT.
The plan shape is not symmetrical. You can see it if you look closely at the picture below. The wide point is closer to the front foot (like a surfboard)
For example look at your short board for mush surf now look at your Gun for big waves. Notice how your gun runs out turns better on fat sections.
Wide point up there makes it much more comfortable for running out long turns with out tripping/stalling on a rail or bogging down too much.

Did that. The wide point is a couple of inches toward the nose. The nose is a fraction wider than the tail.

Couple of questions. Do you ride it both ways a lot or mainly toddies one way Also how does it load up boost and land compared to a tt. Also does it ride on a rail or Flatish like sb or both. Also if going both ways what is it like to jibe does it stick or can you spin it easy enough or cRve jibe And turn??
