I was lucky enough to get out yesterday on the 7.5m CULT between 1pm and 3pm at Long Reef. It was pretty windy, I had a look at the chartrs upon my return and there seemed to be some gusts reaching around the 33 - 34 knot mark. Swell was massive, and really messy.
Can I say that the 7.5m CULT is with out a dought the most awesome kite I have ever flown, I can not believe how easy it made yesterdays session. there was 3 other guys out there trying to ride with not much luck, it was super hard conditions. But when you looked at the CULT in the sky, it was as happy as larry! I know there is not going to be many days when I can use this kite, but man I am looking forward to the next one! The boosts were great, excellent hand time, easy control. I was pretty much the only one going up wind (there was a 15+ knot sweep running because of the swell, and the wind was close to onshore) as the CULT allowed me to ride at full speed comfortably, and in control. You have to try this kite.....

JB
I don't know...these guys seem to be doing all right !

I saw you out there JB, i had my wind gauge it hit 45KN in the gusts on a couple of occasions.I looked on in envey as i thought it may be beyond my level. My judgement got the better of me as i thought my 9xbow may have been a little to big.Or was i mistaken![]()
Yes User, Those boys did look like they were having fun, but that was several hours after I had been out. The tide was higher and the wind and swell had dropped conciderably, when I first went out the surf was out of control, it took 5 or 6 runs for me to make it out through the beach break. but none the less, still very gnarly conditions, I believe one of the boys got into some trouble out there, lost his kite and had to get towed in? but not sure about the details.
Yendor, 45kn, thats funken windy, don't know about that, maybe a rouge gust or 2, there were some big ones out there though, but the CULT did so well, I was riding with the stopper at half way, and it was perfect. At no time was I out of control, it would be interesting to see how much wind the CULT could handle and still be comfortable.

JB
yes they were extreme gusts but thats what the gauge said. It was consistantly around 25-30KN maybe a bit more.![]()
You really appreciate these kites when it gets extremely windy, because the kite maintains its shape and the canopy is under constant tension the kite does not get any silly ideas when fully sheeted out and no sign of any inversions when doing so.
Also when the kite hits the water it hits on the two pointy ends of the sigma shape on the leading edge , this area is reinforced to the max so there is a less chance of tearing the leading edge or the canopy for that matter.
Thank fark for the smart loop I can now depower the kite comfortably.
12 arrived today cant wait to try it out.
Had a session on the 12 yesterday wind was about 20 to 25 knots Ne.
Very similar to the nine , turning speed was a little faster than my 12 raven but not as quick as my 12 torch somewhere in between. Its not the fastest turning 12 I have flown nor is it the slowest. The kite has alot of low down grunt and a great top end especially now with the smart loop, just set it and use the adjustable stopper, very clean system.
Wind range is huge on this kite , no need for a bigger kite especially with the 5,5 fish.Jumping is certainly different to the nine not quite tuned in to the jumping like I did on the nine cult.I would certainly not go any bigger than a 12.Relaunch is piss easy.Maybe I might need to get the 4mtr extensions for the 12 if Im riding on flat water. What is best about these kites in the waves because the kite is under constant tension , when riding a wave and you come down the face a little to fast the kite falls back corrects itself and just follows you down the wave, no falling out of the sky, the smooth power delivery is the smoothest I have ever felt on any kite I have flown.
All in all very happy with the 12 and 9 cult there is a nice overlap in wind ranges with these two kites and I would say it would cover a range of 15 to 32 knots quiet comfortably between the two.![]()
Danza I was wondering if you could help me with some infomation about how the torch compares to the raven, Im currently using a 2006 raven 10m and am happy with its performance but would like to buy a light wind kite one day, something fast turning and powerfull in 13-17 kns. When I read that your torch turned faster then your raven I figure it must be a good performing kite,do you think a 2007 torch 14m would get me (70kg) well powered up in that wind range? My raven when powered up goes up wind real well, is the torch similar or better and how do they compare with boost and hangtime? I can`nt afford a new kite so any info on the differences or similarities between these two kites would be much appreciated thanks.
East the difference between the Raven 06 kites I had to the 07 Torch is huge.
Raven flys faster but turns slower than the Torch.
When the raven jumps it wants to take you higher and higher and rip your harness of as well.
The torch lifts you up very smoothly and glides where as the raven is extremely floaty. The depower on the Torch is almost sle like with the swept tips.
Last years torch was awesome , when I got my torch I never wanted to fly my ravens again because I liked the torch so much, it was a much better all round kite , but in saying that when I bought my ravens all I wanted to do was jump and you wont find a better kite for that.
And also if your into freestyle the Torch will deliver where as the Raven really is not the best kite for unhooking.
Relaunch on the Torch is easier than the Raven but both kites are easy to relaunch due to the fifth line.
As for 70kg and a 14 mtr torch all I can say is go for it.
