Hey all,

Heading to Vietnam/Cambodia in a fortnight. Any recommended places for kiteboarding over there? I'm a beginner, had two lessons in Adelaide, but progressing fast probably need one more lesson only. Then hoping to spend a few days advancing my skills with consitent winds and hopefully cheap rental prices.

Any help appreciated greatly! :)

Mui Ne vietnam, not much elsewhere vietnam, few beaches here & there.

Mui Ne is ok, don't let them send you out for a lesson in 25kts with 2m swell like I saw. They'd just put a wacking great life vest on these students and launch them off the top of the beach and send a boat after them when they disappeared over the horizon. Not my idea of a good way to learn.

Cambodia - Otres beach would be ok but not much wind..

Mui Ne in Vietnam indeed, plenty of schools there on the beach. Not sure if it will be windy already though!

Cambodia: check out Kampot and contact the guys at Villa Vedici (www.villavedici.com/) and www.cambodiakiteboarding.com/ - great and huge flatwater spot in the river mouth, kneedeep water, and no other kiters around. Again not too sure about the wind but when it blows it will be the perfect spot to learn. Villa Vedici is a nice place to stay as well, and if there is no wind I think they can take you wakeboarding to improve your boardskills. Kampot has some other adventures to offer (rent a scooter and drive up the mountain for the view, go to Kep and eat some Kampot pepper crab, do a day trip to Rabbit Island, rent scooters and go find the caves, including the "swimming cave"...).

Stay away from Sihanoukville/Otres beach etc. - unless if you want to hang out on a filthy party beach with dirty old men with barely legal prostitutes, backpackers in their early twenties who look like they're 45 because they've been partying on any drug possible for the last 5 weeks, and annoying hasslers/beggers trying to sell you **** .

Hmm not quite as good as I was expecting! Kampot I will definitely check out, sounds ideal and probably worth checking out regardless of the kiteboarding. Thanks for that.

Any other countries worth flying to close by or on the way back to Australia? Philippines, Indonesia? I'd more then happy take a detour on my trip for a clean, friendly, non-overcrowded and non-party island type place with decent wind and kiteboarding that time of year.

Has anyone kited at Hoi An in Vietnam? I went there in July a few years ago and remember it being pretty windy, but I wasn't into kiting then so not actually sure about the wind strength.

Always thought it would be a cool place to go on a kiting holiday, just chill east some good food and kite.

You'll be fine at Mui Ne and the wind has already kicked in.

No one understands right of way or beach etiquette, pure chaos, get amongst it!

There is a softer beach break down the southern end of the beach and a lot more space for launching/landing.

Ask for Tommy from C2Sky.

He is a great instructor and will also get you hooked up for a few beers.

the place is a bit of a mecca, so not sure about uncrowded unless you can work out somewhere off the beaten track after a few days, prices probably getting up a bit these days too but still cheaper then western if you arrive and look for a deal.
i guess depends where you are coming from... i'd go phillipines over vietnam personally. have fun.

Just came back from Muine, wind is on already, my 5 trip in a few years.

Best school C2Sky ask for Liz owner and great location on the south end.

Once riding there are daytrips you can get on to go up to Pha Rang up the coast a bit ,flat water and waves out on the reef.

There is a lot of crazys there in peak seasion and bay can get choppy , but learn in chop makes for better skills , wind is very consistant in the season and every thing is cheaper than bali , food ,drinks etc.

Great place , great people ,just hook up with C2sky and they will look after you

I traveled through it after doing Mui Ne in April 2012. Cool little town and great cheap food indeed! There was a slight breeze when I was there, and the water looked fine for kitesurfing, but I didn't pump up my 12 because no time and already had my "kiting-part" of the holiday in Mui Ne. I did kite every day in Nha Trang on the way up to Hoi An though, so Nha Trang is defo kiteable and, if there's wind, so is Hoi An.

I prefer Philippines to Vietnam for everything but the food
Boracay way to busy on water and in general.
Check out kingfisher beach, awesome- but loads of great spots in Phil.

Went to Boracay in December last year and met a local guy Ken. Hes got a kite school over in Union
freestyle-boracay.com/ Its was around a 15 min downwinder from Boracay saw some dolphins along the way and has some accommodation over there. Pretty much the same conditions as Boracay but hardly any people over there. Great place and plenty of wind and cold beer over there too. Was on my 10m most days

Interested to know your thoughts on Kampot

I am in siem reap as well. Heading to kampot hopefully within a week. Also love to hear about it if you have been recently and wind as well.

Did you guys get there? I'm at sihanouk Ville now looking for kite gear. There's about 12 with gusts but can see a kite flying easy on octres beach.? Going to stop st all the spots on my way up Vietnam to, looking to rent or buy gear if the wind is blowing.any idea how much over this way. Or better to rent ect

But if your wind driven why would you travel overseas
This time of the year I could take you to the most pristine kiting spots for learning or experienced kiters
I'm curiouse to know why we travel when we've some of the best conditions here

Just got back turned out I only had a day at Kampot wind was a bit fickle should have had a week or more would have been great lots of happy pizza shops lots of things to do..this photo is of ream beach couple hours west of kampot , at the Monkey Maya guest house




Cambodia was a very interesting place chaotic traffic, beautiful ppl ,awesome food
