Anton's latest video, responding to criticisms and questions raised by episode 1. His approach is thorough and well researched. His video also clearly shows why we need to get rid of the harness hook (for everyone except freestyles and some wave riders).

His vids are very good. Quality advice. As we know, it all happens quickly and if you have practiced this hopefully your muscle memory is quick to respond.

How many of us are riding without a safety knife, I wonder?

Most kiters , I always give a pre season reminder, should be standard issue not an optional purchase with harnesses , I'd like to see harnesses with a release too, some have played with this , mystic, prolimit but an industry across the board mechanism would be good to see

Speaking from experience, don't put too much faith in that little kite knife saving you.


Never kite alone.

Another thing, that no one ever mentions is have 2 quick release points on your safety line.

I use this to attach my safety to my harness.

I thought these designs don't release easily under pressure? Something about the higher the load, the higher the friction exerted on the retaining pin resulting it becoming progressively harder to release the pin.

Interesting, I'll look into it.

I know there are a few different designed quick release shackles. May have to replace this one if that is the case.

Given the majority of kiters you see continue to use a long leash attached to the back of their harness, a hook knife isn't going to be much help if the kite is still making power and your being dragged backwards. Even being draggee forwards the kite lines could well be out of reach.

With a decent short safety leash there's no big need for a harness Q/R?

Is the ring welded? If not, you will rip it straight off and be permanently attached.

Even if it is welded, those can be hard to release under a lot of tension. The safest to be used with a ring are these wichard snap shackles - marine.wichard.com/rubrique-Quick_release_snap_shackles-0202040300000000-ME.html Except you replace the small pull line which is hard to locate, with a thicker 3-4mm rope that goes through both sides of the shackle, with a large ball on either side. Will post photo when I find it.

Let us know how you go. I'm thinking you just need to suspend yourself under it and try and pull the pin. Once the kite force become more than your weight you are now flying (or being dragged I guess)

Slow drowning by death loops, I'd prefer to be eaten by a shark :( The quick release harness looks like a good backup plan, has anyone used the Mystic KRS spreader bar? but how many kiters do you see with a small safety, how many do you see attatch to the front and not the side, how many kiters would have a clue how to get through death loops, how many kiters have watched this video, your kite is attatch to your harness, ridding yourself of your harness unless line wrapped is ridding yourself of an out of control kite, most hang on to the bitter end in my experiences

Anyone seen or got Anton's Learning to fly dvd?

Had my share of death loops and while ive seen this video actually remembering and doing it on the water is quite another when you are slightly panicked . Something that needs to be practiced but is quite hard to do.

One time i got dragged backwards by a long leash on a death looping kite with boots. No fun and it took about 1 second of being pulled under water before releasing the whole thing. Imagine if i couldnt release! I do my leash on the front after that so i have a change to reach might change when i do a lot of handle passes but not before then. Also never bying a cab bar due to the huge bar ends, trying to get a wrapped line of em when the kite is pulling hard was quite difficult.

Yeah we all like to kite with other people but depending on where you live you can kite on your own a fair bit.

Did I understand it right that the solution to a death loop is to massively haul in on one of the steering lines?

I love this dude. Been waiting for E III for months now

Never, ever, use this type of shackle in a situation where you may need to release under a high load - THEY DO NOT RELEASE
You must also pull on that dodgy split ring in line with the release pin, pull sideways to the pin and it simply DOES NOT WORK.
