Friendly reminder to go get a skin check up.

Was checked 18 months ago by a skin specialists in Perth and was given the all clear.

Now what I thought was a pimple that wouldn't heal, was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma SCC.

Sucks to be just over 30 and getting skin cancers......Under the knife on Tuesday.

Yep, just had a "melanoma in situ" removed from my shoulder. That's a bad one and can kill you. Luckily they got it before it went too deep. Get regular skin check ups, it could save your life.

Farrkk.. not good news J. I hope they nip it out and that's the end of that crap. Yeah, I slop on a full arm length rashy up here in the Nth all the time. The risk is not worth trying to look cool all the time.

I did hear that loops cure cancer though.

dont mean to scare your kids, but this is me straight after a 2 1/2 hour exo flap operation to remove a bcc , this was as good as it got for a week, the swelling got much worse and resulted in a heomorage, i had this done a couple of weeks after having 3 lumps removed from my neck and recently been on chemo cream (efudix) which will continue for a bit yet, my plastic surgeon remarked how hes seen a big increase in people who enjoy time on or in the water, and a big increse in bottom lip cancers especially, the sun is bloody harsh at times and its a good reminder with the coming season to spend time to apply quality sun protection, ive been guilty of spending more time on the water than i should without protection, also i mentioned the lump near my eye for 2 to 3 years a my local skin clinic and was told it was nothing to worry about, so ensure you get good skin care or quality checks, my surgeon was horrified when i told him this and he recommended a dermatologist over a skin clinic

The only skin on my head that doesn't get suncream on it, is my eye balls (well not till I hit the water). I put it inside and outside my ear, eyelids, all through my thinning hair, under my jaw and down past the line of the rashy/wetsuit. It certainly helps if you can find a suncream that doesn't sting the crap out of your eyes after the first crash.

Not all sunscreens are as good as they claim. I use to have a big squat bottle of a Quick Silver branded Suncream I brought from Surf FX (Gold Coast) which the guy recommend because he wore contact lenses. Wish I could find more of it. Never got burnt once when using it, but some of these other water resistant suncreams I tried aren't worth a pinch of $hit.

Any one found a good one that currently available on the market?

Had a BCC removed from my face earlier this year. Took two trip to a slice and dice shop as the first time the "skin specialist" didn't get it all. The second time I went to a dermatologist. If it happens again I will go straight to a dermatologist and not muck around.

A good face sun cream I recently found is Island Tribe, that stuff never comes off and works a treat. Plus I wear a bucket hat.

Yep, a good reminder. I just had a spot taken off my shoulder by the dermatologist yesterday. I also had a "in situ melanoma" removed 20 years ago from my shoulder. I am meant to get a check up every year which I kinda do but like people have mentioned, it's hard to find someone who knows what they are doing. Many GPs don't have a clue. Not really their fault as they can't be experts on everything but it's good to be aware of and if in doubt, get a second or third opinion.

One spot a while ago the GP said was fine. I wasn't comfortable with it so went to another GP and told them to chop it out.

Better safe than sorry.

I'm also recovering from getting my ears drilled out from surfers ear so hopefully will be back in the water soon ready for summer seabreezes!!

If you are out in the water and exposed to the sun you need to see a dermatologist once a year.

No Gp No skin cancer clinic. A DERMATOLOGIST.

It will probably set you back $300 less medicare rebate but it is the best money you will ever spend .

Agreed. After many years of working through GPs and "skin cancer clinics" (they seemed like a scam of sorts when I went to one), i now only see dermatologists. I am now on my 3rd one in Perth and finally happy with this guy. He does a thorough job.

Yep similar story; BCC removed between my eye and nose bridge a few years ago as well as a few suspect moles cut out so I decided to get a MoleMax done every 6 months. They photograph about 70 moles to look for changes and I think the gap payment is about $170, anyhow money well spent in my opinion...

Studies have suggested a link between low vitamin D levels and cancer risk and progression.
Indicating sun exposure helps to prevent and fight cancers.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that just under one in four (23%) Australian adults are vitamin D deficient.
So a little sun is good - just don't get burnt.

And if you do get burnt, stay out of the sun totally until the skin has healed (5 days maybe). Burn on burn increases risk (apparently)

I ended up with Melanoma a few years ago then a fair few BCC's appeared. I was recommended by my GP to see a Dermatologist / Surgeon that specialised in Mohs Surgery.
I've had a fair few BCC's cut out from around my face, neck, ears and if you want to try and keep as much of your good looks as a crusty old sea dog can, Mohs Surgery is worth a look. They reckon it can make a difference as to how much extra you have excised around the BCC and SCC as they cut and then check and keep going until they get away with taking the bare minimum. Bit of extra time in surgery whilst you wait until they check that they got it all but I've had some good results, so worth looking at it especially for nose, ears, lips etc.

Heading to the dermatologist today to get a suspect lump cut out of my bottom lip, I have already had one cut out of my lip on the left side so now I will have a matching one on the right,

I work in the sun and of course play in it too so exposure is inescapable, at work I can usually keep my skin lathered up pretty good but the lips are the hard one they always get burnt to ****

One helpful trick I have learned is to put the sunscreen on whilst in the car ( eyes on the road if your the one driving) that way you can blast it with aircon and when you get to the beach it is set nicely , it's especially good when you rock up and your super excited to get out there it means one less step before your on the water

I have used a heap of different sunscreens over the years but the best one at the moment is the cancer council sport 50+, also use zinc and bucket hat- the go joe and reel leash are optional but they really help to complete the look

I just got the new 2017 model bottom lip as you can see they have really beefed up the stitching

Just had one of these done myself plus one on nose and 3 on the back, not bad at 51 my doc reckon, little needle for numbing hurt like a bitch. ha.
Got the results back a week later and all good all benign.
THis is a good thread for all about the dangers of the sun. The guys that want to surf/kite with no shirt no sunscreen, mmm, the clock is ticking.
