Hi guys.

I got a Cabrinha Secret Weapon, and tomorrow is just the day to ride a waveboard for the first time.

Now, I'm trying t attach straps, and I can not figure it out, even though it should be simple. The washer and the straps have three holes, meaning I have some room for preference in regard to strap placement depthwise, but is there any reason not to have the straps symmetrical? If I don't use the middle hole on the washer, the wrong side setup will be quite different from the right side placement?

Also, the biggest problem: the screw just doesn't go down very far. It sticks up, and the washer can spin around freely, which doesn't make any sense. I have two different sets of straps, one from North and one from Concept X, and I just can't get the screws down deep enough.
Is there anything particular going on with Cabrinhas boards?

Ride strapless.

Thanks for the tip! I want to switch to strapless quickly, but start with the straps. Also, jumping strapless isn't really possible as you can not stick to the board, unless you are doing a board off?

I would appreciate help with the strap setup. If I can't get them on, I'll just have to go strapless tomorrow after all.

Where did you get the straps and screw from? A twin tip? If it was, I think twin tips and surfboards often have different inserts so you might have to get a new screw from the shop.

I use my straps symmetrical and if you enjoy straps, keep them on.

Wait......what?

I presume the board doesn't have meal inserts as that screw is for plastic. Other than that check the depth v lengh of the screw as well as the screw gauge. It will be tight as they need to make the thread as they go in though.

These are North surfboard straps. I also have another set of surfboard straps, with just as long screws. Isn't it weird that they seem too long?
Why would the standard screws not fit a standard Cabrinha surfboard?

If there is no metal insert like previously said it will be very tight to get in as it has to cut its own thread . If you can only get it so far down and really want the straps on just put extra washers under the screw. But seriously straps are for a twintip

Screw looks on the angle slightly I hope its not cross threaded?
If all brand new use some soap on the screw and screw it in first.
Gauge the depth sometimes longer screws are used on the rear foot pad because its a touch thicker.
Cross matching strap brands shouldn't be a problem, screws length may vary.
measure how deep you can screw, screws in and then buy (marine) shop correct length stainless screws.
use centre hole on the straps at least start symmetrical.

It's easier to start strapless then to go from strapped to strapless in my opinion. You can also jump with the board strapless just takes practise , the board will stick to your feet in the wind if you angle it right.

As already mentioned, those screws are for plastic inserts. If you have metal inserts and try to force the screws in you will damage the board. Make sure you have the correct screws.

Forget about all the strapless hype and ride the way you want. Strapless is fun but most ride really lame on their strapless boards. 10% at best who actually pull off some decent waveriding & strapless tricks (I am also in that other 90%).

... looks like you have the wrong size screw for the holes in the board. Too big in this case. Just get narrower screws but same length to get the same depth and therefore strength.

Also, the 3 hole washer thing is to support the strap sideways rather than length ways with the teeth bit going into the webbing. This helps the strap from not twisting as you jam your foot in when in a hurry. I reckon just use the middle hole and keep the straps in line with mid line of the board.

Or,,,,,, you could just ditch 'em as this mysterious myth that strapless is hard just 'aint so,,,,, it's easier than people think. The first ah-ha moment I had was I just had to slow down.

I got to the hardware store and got the same screw length, just a little thinner. Fit perfectly.
The straps however, didn't really work. I used the two holes furthest back for the back strap, and the furthest back and the middle one for the front strap, which made for a little more space, however they were still too small. Shoesize is 45. As it was, because of barely getting in the straps, I had to stand on the edge of the board, which didn't work when going toeside.
Took the straps off and was out 2 hours strapless. No problem, but I couldn't perform the gybe. Trying that persistently lead to some funny falls from the board. :-)

... nice one, good to hear you had a crack at it!

Some thing that helped me with the gybing strapless was lean into the carve and try to keep pressure on your front foot throughout the carve. In my early days I would try to carve too hard and would lean too much onto the back foot, causing the board to bounce out from under me and shoot forward. If I kept more pressure on the front foot then all good.

Not sure why the straps aren't big enough for you,,,, I've got size 48 (13UK) and they were big enough for me. Has the adjustment of the strap been pulled too much ie the little strap that makes it shorter? Maybe the width of the screw holes are too far apart, not sure as I'm not familiar with the Secret Weapon. Dunno??

Just wondering, is this how you set it up? Can you measure the distances, both hole distances and the strap itself.

Let us know as it might be a north strap incompatible with Cab board??

ps nice looking board, always wanted to try one, looks fun!

The north straps have 2 hole settings to choose from, when mounting the straps.
You can also let the adjuster strap out on the top, to make them looser.

If your super stuck, take the board back to the shop, you bought it from and get them to help you.
Shops have draws full of screws that are sold just for that board.

enjoy tho.

The North straps have an arrow on one side, and when pushing on it, you can extend the straps size. Fitting well now.
I went with only one strap now, the front one, will try it the next time I get out on the water.

Would you say I should first learn gybing and then tacking?

It's the purest form of kiting, all these show ponies who tell you that you need a "board" and "straps" don't understand TRUE kiting.

Don't get too caught up in straps/strapless, both are awesome. Do both, you will get a different experience from each style.
