In one of the last areas of bushland at the south end of Lancelin, behind the famous back beach (which is a world class awesome kiting location) the Shire of Gingin is proposing to rezone land which is currently zoned Parks and recreational land, and place 291 caravan, chalet and tent sites, how do you think this will affect kiters ability to enjoy the sport we all love , surely kite restrictions will eventually be introduced. We are for progress in this town for camping but not hovering over an already delicate coast line, please share your concern with the Shire of Gingin before the end of this month, they are closing in on us and we need to stand to up for the bush, the coast, the ability to enjoy the ocean freely without restrictions and rules and to keep this place for future generations to enjoy. There are other locations that are more suitable for this caravan park that won't affect our environment as much, please contact Gingin shire if you enjoy kiting in lancelin and want It to stay how it is

It might well enhance the location for kiters. Somewhere good to camp and hang out while waiting for the breeze. The closer to the beach the better.

Last time I was there, (3 weeks ago) it's pretty much bush from Yanchep to Lancelin along the coast!

Haven't seen the plans you refer to but am failing to see how it could be a negative for kiters. After all when it's 20 knots + we are pretty much the only people using that beach.

What other locations "that won't affect our environment as much" do you think would be more suitable?

You start bulldozing dunes the break will change forever. Sand movement is everything. If you change the amount of sand there is to be moved my natural causes(wind/water) don't expect a decent bank there again.

Plenty of examples of this closer to Perth we don't need any more.

Also the main one is then the general public then being in a kite zone, and we all know who wins that one, apart from the main holidays up here camp spots generally are very quiet , to have another one IMO wouldn't make sense, big outlay for the development might keep it safe Anna,

We all have our own opinion and I appreciate that, we wanted to post this on seabreeze so that people that are concerned can talk to the Shire of Gingin and express their concerns

I believe there is a 150m exclusion zone between the beach and park. I hope it gets the go ahead. Lanno needs the proper kind of infrastructure for the population of tourists that head up that way.

Not that bad an idea, couldn’t book this weekend at the campsite as it was full so stayed out of town. Sounds like the typical WA resist change, "the world is going to implode if this is changed". May be there could be a nice grassed picnic area for the kiters on the point like Werner has for the windsurfers, ok it would have to be tucked behind a dune or trees to shelter from the wind and sand.

Bigger problem on the point is the 4WDs parked right on the water’s edge. When it’s 20 knots+ like yesterday it’s dodgy walking through all the vehicles. Not to mention them driving over lines as you’re running them out (this happened a couple of times yesterday). Would be good if people were a bit more considerate and parked 50m back from the water.

The land next to the tavern is apparently owned by a well known property developer, they are happy to sit on the land for its apparent land value.

South End Caravan park is owned by BGC last I heard. It's mostly occupied with permanent sites with few sites left for short term use.

North End Caravan Park is owned by a family trying to develop it.

Neither caravan park really cares whether they get customers in and spend next to nothing on improvements and both have been known to turn away potential customers because they didn't book and only want one or two nights - even if they have bucketloads of empty sites.

There is a bucketload demand for a decent caravan park in the town, you only have to look at how much Guilderton is fully booked over summer. The Shire of Gingin can't really force the existing caravan parks in town to lift their game so why not allow a developer to build a new one? Th businesses in town will love it but the amenity of the beach will suffer with more people accessing the back beach if it goes ahead on the proposed site.

You're blatantly contradicting yourselves now. You and a few others are carrying on about how "precious" the bush is and where will the Osprey get their twigs and what will happen to the flowers and frogs if the area is cleared of the scrub and yet you're now behind "bulldozing" scrub 800m away. I can tell you that land is full of the exact same crappy bush as the proposed site. Environmental damage??? More like "NIMBY"!

Like someone else said, when it's blowing 20knots very few if any park guests are going to be sunning themselves on the beach. The beauty of our sport is that we get the whole beach to ourselves cos of the wind.

Probably not the smartest way to play it, some of those against it can't decide on what their stance is. Don't build it there, move it at least 500 metres from the coast (so you want to build a caravan park at the tip or the golf course), maybe you can build it there (if it's smaller), it's about the remnant bush, no wait it's about kite access on the water, build it down near the back beach carpark (let's bulldoze a small coastal wetland instead), let's dig up a 7 year old news article from another state or we should make the existing caravan parks lift their game (how?).

A co-ordinated and consistent approach will always work best.

* The wrecking of the beach
* The birds that'll die
* The kiters who'll be evicted

Perhaps someone in the know might post some maps/diagrams/imagery showing what & where is being proposed - there's nothing better than people being informed about WTF is going on, or proposed to be going on....otherwise it's the blind leading the blind, isn't it?

I have been going to Lancelin for about 40years but mainly reside at the other end of town so not as affected by this proposal as some, however I am a kiter and surfer and do spend time at the back beach, Eddies etc.

I am not sure what to think of the proposal, I believe the town could do with a better Caravan Park however I do have concerns that down the track it could impact on vehicle and kiting access in the area.

ATM vehicles are not allowed access along the beach in front of the proposed park in Summer anyway and I can't see how it could impact on the existing back beach/point carparks or 4wd access besides the increase in numbers.

* The Shire commenced planning for this in 2010
* Tourism WA appointed feasibility consultants in 2011
* 10-15 homes will directly face the park, their sea views won?t be affected
* The area is Unallocated Crown Land with vegetation in a degraded condition
* No wetlands are impacted
* Built infrastructure will be no higher than the existing coastal foredune.
* No rare/endangered flora/fauna likely to be present
* Traffic to Edward Island may increase
* There exists a risk of unexploded ordinances
* Beach access will still be by paths north and south of Park
* Park unlikely to have significant impact on coastal environment
* 150m of coastal foreshore reserve to be established between park and beach
