Hi,
I'm getting a motorbike to get to/from work and I figured, hey why not use it to get to the beach?
I've been on google and I searched the forum for some easy to install (and fairly cheap) solution on how to mount a surfboard or a twin tip board on the side of the bike, but all I have found are kind of sketch DIY ones or racks for scooters..
Any tips on where I can find a motorbike rack that would fit a 135cm twin tip (with boots) or a 7'4 surfboard on a regular motorbike, say a Honda VTR 250?
Ps.
According to NSW laws (hungracks.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/www.legislation.nsw_.gov_.au_inforcepdf_2005-607.pdf) it seems that the board can't be sticking out more than 15cm in the front or 30cm in the back, but since a bike is about 2m long and 7'4 = 2,23m I think it will fit inside the legal limit
hey bliz check gumtree or ebay Ive seen them on both sights second hand for around 50 bucks or new they sell for around 150
Ive got Carver bike racks $100 new, but second hand,
be sure to get motorcycle racks and not bicycle racks
Bike racks are much stronger and sturdier than the bicycle racks

Hi Blizwire. This is my rig. I rest the front of the board on the pillion footrest and I have a simple aluminium bracket at the back. I'll post some better pictures tomorrow.
Careful not to burn your gear on the exhaust and make sure there are no loose straps to get into the chain or wheel.
In indonesia we would hire a guy with a sidecart scooter to transport our gear for less than $10. 30 mins each way to the kite spot and he would wait around and watch us kite...

Simon you need to seriously invest in some racks that looks dangerous

Don't worry, there is a rack behind there, the bottom hook that the board is resting on is covered by the impact vest :-). It is very secure and I have been using it like this for a year, as I am sure many folks who kite at Mellville will attest to. Sorry I forgot to take a few pics of it last night, I'll try and remember tonight.
The rack is attached with pneumatic fittings that are permanently installed on the bike.

Hey guys,
thanks for all the tips.
@SimonDreyer: Your solution looks pretty cool. I was thinking about something similar, just to be able to mount the board on the side and also be able to ride normally without the board to work and so on without having to remove the mount or screw it on and off all of the time.
Can you send some more pictures of the mount, thanks!
My biggest concern now is that I have boots on my board, so my board isn't as slim as a normal board. So I would need to mount it in way that makes sure that the boots aren't sticking to far out to the side (NSW laws apparently prohibits you from mounting anything to the side of the motorcycle that extends further out than the bike itself (i.e. the tip of the handle bars)).
If anyone has more ideas and pictures that would be great.
Most important is to ensure that your lights / indicators and brake light can still be seen at 45 degrees from the side.
