I don't know if it's just me or if car breaks in's to steal kite gear are getting more frequent?

I used to naively think that thieves weren't interested in stealing kite gear, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Two of my friends got broken into recently and one just last night who lost 2 kites, 2 boards, 2 bars etc, even Thom in Exmouth got broken into 2 days ago...

Of course moving the gear from the car to the house is the best and smartest idea but we all know how much of a pain that is when you have a lot of gear.

I was wondering how much you guys pay for insurance on your kite gear? Car insurance companies don't seem to cover for valuables above $500 so that doesn't seem to be a good option. I phoned RAC about home insurance that covers your equipment in the car, up to 5 items for a max of $1000 per item. That insurance cost $290 per year and you essentially have $5000 worth of kite gear covered. Is this good ?

I'd be keen to hear about other options and costs of insurance for kite gear

RAC doesnt cover Kitesurfing Gear in their Home Contents. I have talked with two different representatives.

Im with Allianz.

Also.. the way it works for me.. is that I have 1500 per item up to 5000 if I remember correctly, I never have more than two kites in my car and one board.

Last time I checked with them was in November.. so maybe they have changed. :)

I have unspecified valuables cover up to $2k per item, not sure what the total loss is. Regardless I try not to keep all of my gear in the car and if I do I keep it well hidden and avoid having giveaway stickers on the car. Last thing i want to do is make an insurance claim, but good to know it is there.

Thought I was covered by RAC until I asked the question directly. Turned out I wasnt. That was a deal breaker. Did the ring around and came up with AAMI. Moved 2 cars bike and H&C over to them. Kiting gear listed as portables on the H&C policy. Covered in the car, but not while you're using them.

It seems any insurance company associated with IAG like NRMA is excluding kite gear (maybe they're scared of the liability?)

I had all my gear,everything,3 boards,4kites ,harnesses ,bars etc covered buy AMMI under house contents.
was only maybe another $100 a year to cover anything i lost or had stollen.
New for old
Had gear stollen recently and found the guy and could prove the whole event.
Police just said they were to busy.
Get the insurance,a $200 stollen board turns into a $800 new one of your choice.
And excess was only $100 to claim.
How often Ive almost left my bar in the sand too.

My kites are covered (with 500 excess) in the car and on land when dip ****s throw sticks on them it seems. With HBF under house and contents of that helps.

Perth / WA seems to have more than its fair share of thieves.

Extreme vigilante violence is the only answer. Happy to chip in for a hired goon to come to Leighton beach to come and sort things out once a month.

I'm with Aami h&c and have each of my kites and boards covered against loss or theft, outside the home.

Which means even if I lose a board or a kite flies over the horizon they're covered.

Currently with a bank's house insurance b4 with RACQ and b4 that RACV - I have to itemise the kit and put a $value on it - puts a premium on insurance. Most insurance policies have a standard un-itemised cover but not adequate for expensive kit. So ask to have itemised kit insured and find out premium.

I think it's about an extra $200 every year. Yes, it's the cost of a kite every 10 years, but what if my car gets broken into and the lot gets taken?

Hell I pay $1000 a year for comprehensive car insurance and my car is only worth probably $15k now, same diff.

This time last year I made two legitimate Youi claims (kitesurf gear as specified items $3500, one board and two kites under household insurance adding less then $130 to annual premium) and they paid out no problem after I paid excess. Below is the Cab bar I claimed upon that literally broke up in the surf and my old Zephyr got trashed one too many times and couldn't be repaired for safety reasons so it was the other claim.

Fair point. Insurance is about making money, so it should be cheaper to self insure (save).

Just claimed damaged items. I provided images, quotes to repair or replace whatever was applicable. The argument against multiple kite repairs is a bit like how many times do you repair a parachute before writing it off as unsafe. There is a small but possible risk of serious mishap at sea if an equipment failure goes really pear-shaped when kiting. I released a 7-metre kite and bar and lines after just that and paddled what seemed like 500 meters after drifting out to sea when the wind changed to cross-off and the kite was down after the leading edge bladder burst. My other option was self rescue and paddle the lot in but fading light and sharks had me choose the former not the latter.
I don't recall any angst from YOUI, goods used for their usual purpose so I would assume not much difference to insuring an expensive push bike then running it into a parked car (as my neighbour did recently) or my kids kicking a footy indoors into a TV screen and claiming accidental damage.
