I'm new to kitesurfing and this forum. I bought a brand new 2016 Airlush kite with the board and line bar. Can someone plz look at the photos and tell me how to connect the leash from the bar to the harness? Do I need to buy something extra to get them connected?

Thanks a lot hope I like this sport :)

Slide the white leash loop into the steel ring, then pull the other end of your leash through the loop.

That's my guess anyway

Your instructor can assist with this no brainer...

Pity the shop didn't give you a heads up on the basics though.

What model kite is it and which shop did you buy from?

Also go to your local beach and introduce yourself. Someone will happily help.

There is no information that cant be bought from local kiters with beers in an esky.

Nope, the orange part close to the loop is not real flexible. Release the white part by pulling the orange section, thread the white part on harness and put the safety back together.

I kinda rushed when I bought it, I should of checked the bar and asked how to connect it all together.
I went few times kitesurfing with a different gear so when I bought this one I thought it would connect same way as the other one I was using.
This is Airlush Lithium 2016 which I was told it's a good kite and easy to learn on as a beginner.

Considering you are a beginner don't attach it to the ring. Attach it to your spreader bar so that the release is right in front of you in case you need to use it.

What thefacts said:

Release the white loop, then you can attach it to the steel ring....or, my preference is to get it further to the front of your harness so it is easily accessible to manually release the kite if needed.

...and yes the lithium is an excellent beginner kite.

Simpler is not always better...but that said it is not exactly difficult either once you know what is going on with the leash...

There's a video showing guy getting yanked backwards by death looping kite. He can't reach his safety as it's tied to the rear of the harness. Luckily the kite died before he did. Bugger me if I can find the video though.

Not saying don't attach to the rear, just making you aware of the potential risks.

Was this the video that you were thinking of?

I was using a different kite to learn on which had different bar system and now with the new one I got it has different bar system. How would you expect me to know all bar systems as a beginner?
I should of asked the guy at the shop tho. I just thought all kites work the same way or connect the same way. Well they are not! Then now I'm learning something new...yea?
All your tips and making me aware of things that I don't know is much appreciated :)

Safety leashes are not an integral part of a kite system. You could always buy the same one that you used during your lessons and use that with the kite. It might help/make you feel comfortable with your safety system.

What you need to do is look at the system in front of you and understand how it works. Don't just believe stuff because people say it or that's what the instructor said. Look at it and work it out.

That does three things for you.

One is you understand the gear you are using.

Two is that once you have understood one set of gear it is easy to understand different gear.

Three is the most important. When your gear malfunctions you can see it right away and the knowledge you have gained lets you work out what to do about it.

BTW Your Airush leash is exactly the same as every other leash on the market. Same functions. Same parts. Different shapes. It's got a bit for attaching to the harness (the white loopy bit). A quick release bit (the orange tube). The tubey-webbing bungee leash itself, and a hook to attach to the kite safety line.

Is it too much to ask an instructor to have a couple of example leashes so new kiters get to see the variation out there and the basic principle behind them all?
And agree that the shop should have run through the operation of the gear before she walked out the door.

Having said that, nobody showed me and I soon figured it out just playing with it on the lounge floor.
But I haven't actually paid for lessons.

Hey sukafun,

You've come to the right place for advice, there's soooo much knowledge being shared on this thread!
I regret not having brought this up while you were in the store. If you want to come in I'd be stoked to spend a bit more time on it with you.

Also, as our store doesn't do lessons, I hope that you've found yourself a good instructor that can properly explain to you how the equipment functions!

As it's been said in this thread, it's great to do your own research and not take any advice as a rule.

Have a great, and safe, season!
Jo from Airborne

Hey Jo,

Thanks for your reply...I still didn't get a chance to touch the kite yet since I bought it 2 months ago :D
I've been busy with work and stuff but since the holiday is coming soon thought of getting back to the beach. Maybe starting from this weekend will join a friend who kites regularly :)

I found this forum to be very beneficial especially found other beginners asking questions that I would like to ask...Also after doing some research on the gear I got helped me a lot to understand generic things that work with any type of kite.

Whatever you do just stay well clear from soulkite and seabreeze kite school for lessons.

Pay peanuts...get chimpanzees...

Alternatively if you are looking to combine sleeping and kiting have a chat to Waveslave.. I'm sure he would love to do some lessons!
