Hi!

Heading to Hawaii for a couple of weeks in mid-late October and looking for advice on the best place(s) to base myself to get a chance of kiting.

(Roughly planning to split my time between Oahu and Maui, but staying flexy).

Main criteria:
-Access to gear rental/school
-Flat water and/or easy surf conditions
-Possible to access if I don’t have a car
-Close to other facilities/activities if there’s no wind.

Any other general recommendations for good stays/experiences in Hawaii would also be appreciated – thanks! : )

On Oahu kiting is on the winward side of the island at Kailua Beach Park. There are rentals across the street from the park that are less expensive than hotels in Honolulu. 12m to 14m is the norm.

Maui the place to hang is in Paia. You need a car to get to Nash Beach. About 15 min drive. October is pre - wave season, but any day in Maui is a good day.

i am a maui fan for sure.. (8 + 10m)

not like the wind machine of june july.. but still its maui... so ...

no guarantees but you can get the most epic big swell combined with wind that time of year - ie alltime.....

i personally wouldnt bother with oahu kiting - mokes can be sick as.... but if you have any wind issues u can be sure it is way windier on maui....

Sooooo want to score one of those swells one day........ - like huuuge out on the reefs...

Agree - Paia is a great place to stay, close to Kite beaches, you'll need a car, check out Action Sports Maui - Dave and Suzie, I hired gear from them in August reasonable day rate when you arent travelling with your own gear , they will also hook you up with a surfboard or SUP if the wind is not in....beach launch area is a little challenging but once out it is great. Kailua on Oahu was a lovely beach but a bit light for wind when I was there....

agreed with everyone else. Paia is a cool town, good food, best organic market I have ever been to, (they have everything!). Rent a car, plenty for everyone to do. Great sights, the volcano is a must. The kiting is awesome, just be careful of the turtles. They are everywhere and sometimes on a wave you have to dodge them.

iv only been to Oahu, was there earlier this year. stayed at turtle bay resort on the north shore, and I cant recommend this place enough!! awesome waves being on the north shore. I got one day of wind and spend it on the easten side, had a blast. if you want any more info on the resort just shoot me a message!

There's a cool hot chick on the south shore of Maui that rents out cobi camper vans that are ok to tour the island in for a good price. Then you've got the freedom to cruz the island. North shore the wind comes up @ 10am everyday and blows till late arvo..hit kite beach you'll luv it. Camping in state parks is awsome you camp right on the beach hangloose with the locals and wake up on a beautiful beach (south or north shore seasonal swell depending) for a dawn surf.... The guys at Cabrina in north shore let you demo gear subject to "Purchasing" for $50 board kite and harness a day (well to me always, just be polite and respectful and see how you go)!!! I live on Oahu. We have some great kiting. But since you are coming so far and only for a few weeks, better play it safe and go to Maui which more consistently has higher winds. As I write...Kailua is 8 knots and Kite Beach Maui is 15 knots. The North Shore of Oahu has better average wind than Kailua (east)...but still, Maui is the safer bet.

I went to both maui and oahu for all of september last year, we got 3 x early season swells, oahu had super fun surf but was only kite able on a few days.. maui on the other hand was windy every day, its like someone flicks on the switch at 10 - 11 o'clock every morning, its crazy.. got to kite lanes most days on 9's and 6's.. the wind can be quite gusty and get crowded on weekends!! the lahaina side has fun surf that time of the year especially if youve gotta mrs as its sheltered from the wind a bit more than the north shore. Paia is a super cool town but with good food and feel to it.. id recommend seeing both islands oahu is cool even if you don't get to kite, the surf is good..

I went to Hawaii last year with the family and just took my harness. Only surfed on Oahu and couldn't find anywhere that hires kite surfing gear. Went to kite beach on Maui and there is a guy that parks in the car park with a big van and he will hire gear out. He was only charging around $85 for a afternoon and will spend the first 20 minutes or so with you making sure that you can actually kite. Here are some links that you may find useful.
