Has any body used any external gps tracker to keep track of where they are?? The people I know keep on suggesting trackimo but I don't know it's reliability at sea. Has any one used this kind of tracker or has any other 3g gps tracker to suggest?

If you want a tracker that actually works then you need a SPOT or Delorme. They send messages and tracking data by satellite.

The Trackimo needs a mobile signal to send your location or SOS message. That's not even remotely reliable.

I have been using SPOT for about 10 years in Australia and India. It works fine. It costs about $200 to buy and $150 a year to operate.

Delorme is much more sophisticated but costs about $500 to buy and anything up to $1000 a year to operate.

Just get a cheap gps watch like garmin and output to google maps. Cheers Joe

I've been using a Locosys NAVI GT31 small gps tracker for the past 10 years, quite accurate, loadable into Google maps automatically, gives you everything (speed, distance, location etc) except jumps. There is a web based speed sailing site for windsurfing speeds...www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=item&item=gpsdevice lots of info that got me started. They seem to be happy with the Navi gps device....
The GT31 is plain and simple...I think its now superceded...but the site above is a starting point.
Now i use a Trace.... www.traceup.com .....smaller, pretty accurate gps (compared it to Navi side by side and looks almost identical), does most stuff pretty well including jumps/height/etc etc.....much like the Xensr to be blunt who knows if any of these devices measure jump height accurately????I'm guessing its a guide only.....

Its a phone based app (like xensr and woo, so has limitations if you are remote and want to see your results) and they're not so flashy as Xensr...but it does the biz for me and they're continuing to slowly improve the interface and results available......

Oooohhh but trackimo said they have world wide coverage via their sim and costs 50 dolars less than Spot but hmmm I'll try looking into this. Thanks :D

Yes Trackimo do have worldwide coverage, as long as you have GSM cellular coverage.

If you want to record where you went any GPS device that is IPX7 water resistant will do. I use a Garmin Fenix 3 for that.

If you want people to be able to see where you are and rescue you reliably, then a SPOT or Delorme is the go. It's also much more fun to track and be tracked and much better having something that does something useful every time you use it. It adds to your confidence that it works when you can see your tracks each night when you get home.

SPOT and Delorme are not much good for monitoring your speed and performance. The track points don't have the resolution for that.

If you want to be able to call for help, SPOT and Delorme do that as well as tracking. EPIRB or PLB will call for help, but you have to be able to press the button. Apart from calling for help they do nothing, which is really boring.

If the device enters an area without GSM cellular coverage, the GPS feature will not be able to report its current location until it re-enters an area with network coverage. Once it reconnects, it will transmit a history of its locations that you can view online.

I have an older Garmin Quatix which is a bit dated now but certainly still does the job and you can pick them up pretty cheap now. The newer version (Garmin Quatix 5) is much nicer and does a sh!t load more but of course is more expensive.

The cool thing with these watches are not only are they a watch but they can display all the sailing biased stuff you need, perfect for kiting.

Apart from the obvious displays, time date speed etc it does navigation stuff like MOB (man over board) which is useful. Hit a button and instantly go back to that point with the display showing you where to go. I ran over a large fish once which knocked out, 3 of my 4 fins so I quickly hit the MOB button. Next day at low tide I went back and picked them up,,,, yay!

Another useful feature I like is you can check out the tide data.

I upload my tracks onto a free website (GPSies) where I can convert the data to Google Earth file and then see it on Google Earth. Easy-peasy!

trackimo is easily available at my place but I'll try looking that up sounds worth it though.

Depends what you want it for and how you want to use it?

I used a Delorme Inreach while trekking in Nepal earlier this year. Great for that type of activity and when out of phone range you can send SMS via satellite. But it's no good for having a session on the water and being able to review where you went and how far you travelled like the screen shot above. I think the best setting you can get is a location ping every ten minutes.

Great little device but no good for kiting, unless you're doing an Ian Young style mega-downwinder.

Delorme sounds good. It can send SMS via satellite. If it weren't for the high price I might get this. But I'll look for other gps tracker maybe I'd get lucky and find a good gps tracker with a low price.
