Thumbs Up

Sharing a small story from the Lo Stagnone lagoon Sicily.

Benedek Szente, Junior Freestyle Kitesurf World Champion, was born in 2008 under difficult circumstances. During birth he had to be delivered with the help of a vacuum extraction and weighed almost 4.8 kg.
At six weeks old doctors diagnosed strong muscle stiffness in his neck and legs. In simple terms, he could barely lift his head. At the developmental neurology clinic we were told something that no parent ever wants to hear "that this child might never be able to walk normally." Even today it still tears to my eyes when i write those words.

Around that time I came across a sentence that stayed with me forever: "Start believing in your child. When your belief becomes their inner voice, they will begin to believe in themselves." So that is what we tried to do. Through therapy, patience and constant encouragement Benedek slowly grew stronger. Years later he discovered kitesurfing in the shallow lagoon of Lo Stagnone in Sicily, and from the very first moment something changed.
The water became his freedom.

Thousands of hours followed on the water. Many crashes, frustrating days, small steps forward, and a lot of determination. Step by step he improved.
Today that same boy is a Junior Freestyle Kitesurf World Champion. But what makes me most proud is not the title. It is the person he has become.
Benedek now speaks four languages, studies in a normal high school and continues to train almost every day. His biggest goal today is not only to progress in freestyle, but also to inspire other kids and help them fall in love with kitesurfing. He enjoys spending time on the water with younger riders and sharing what he has learned along the way that with patience and passion anything is possible.

His story reminds us that sometimes the word impossible is only just someone's opinion. Hard work, patience and belief can take a child much further than anyone expects. Just wanted to share this story with the community.

If you ever find yourself in Sicily and would like to ride or train with Beni in the Lo Stagnone lagoon, you can search on Google for: Torre Loopa Kiteschool.

Big hug and windy days,
Mama di Ben kiter
