Forum should promote and encourage discussion – the right environment for discussion is when it is easy to agree but it takes some effort to disagree . I know what you mean though, the green may come from many not so wise and not necessarily be a sign of wisdom

Display the quantity of red and green received on the user profile.

If your ratio of red to green is too high then you get sin-binned and can't post for a few days/weeks. Limit the ability to repeatedly red/green thumb somebody.

I don't want to enter into discussion with trolls. There is no need to explain why something racist/sexist/offensive/trolling is wrong. "If you have something then say it to my face!" is just bullying in disguise.

The green thumb only experience suggests that the forum is a pleasant, supportive place. It can also encourage trolling where trolls get rewarded but there is no way to condemn them without wasting time writing overly long emails and getting into slanging matches.

The giving of thumbs (both red and green) needs to be anonymous. The secret ballot is the essence of democracy. Totalitarian regimes are known for having thugs watching to target dissenting voices.
