Hey Guys,
FOT loaned me a template of his Vader board and I made the below from scratch including the blank. Her name is "DAFT VADER"
1. Blank made from close cell polystyrene used for insulation. Rocker profile cutout and laminated together with 3 paulonia stringers.
2. Carbon rails, used thin double sided tape, used for sticking fabric together like they use on kites, to stick the carbon fibre strips to the board so it did not move when laminating and also to get the position right.
3. Inserted balsa strips in for the channels so had a hard surface to shape up to.
4. Two 4 oz glass fibre on bottom and 4oz and 6oz ontop.
The board was a bit of an experiment. I found that when shaping the blank the foam sanded quicker than the glue used to laminate the rocker profile strips together leaving ridges. Used light weight spackle to smooth it all off and watered down PVA wood glue to seal.
Sprayed the blank with waterbased epoxy enamel to hide all the imperfections.
Got some rice paper, taped it to overhead projector sheets and printed out the decal using a bubble jet printer.
Findings:
The fibreglass does not sick too well to the blank, I think it is due to the blank being non absorbant and alos the paint.
Took her for her maiden voyage and hit Trigg beach point puting a big hole in the bottom and ripping off the two side fins. Surprisingly she still handled OK I think due to the massive channels.
