Hey guys,
just wondering if any of you have experience with the roof top tents?
Thinking about getting one to get the most of my days off.
Have Kayak racks on top of the 4wd, so I thought about something like this where there is plenty of space to store camping equipment and kite gear.

What do you guys recogn?

Thanks, Andreas

My mate just bought a camper trailer. We went camping recently and I got a chance to suss it out. The short sumation is its a bit of a pain in the arse. His is a few years old and possibly not up with the latest designs. There are that many poles, spacing poles and rigging lines required its more hassle than what its worth. In comparison I bought a Oztrail tourer 9 which is so simple and super roomy... lay it out , a peg in each corner of the floor and lift with one centre pole. To provide another shade/dinning/cooking etc...area I have a big heavy duty tarp I got from Bunnings which I erect with two front tent poles and a long spacer, with the back pegged down.

The trailer in the pick looks really good but I would spend some time assesing the ease of set up and pack down of the tent. Its probably ok I imagine but a one man set up that takes 10 mins is alot easier than a 2/3 man job that takes 25mins

Seen some that are really neat myself, they get very compact and keep you off the ground which is nice, only thing is is that you have to pack up the tent to move the trailer.

Thanks guys. This one comes with an ARB tent from 2013, used about three times and parked in a shed with the trailer. The tent is new around 1300-1600 $ I'd say.
The lot for $1400 including rego until Feb '16 sounds fair, doesn't it? This one comes without an awning.

Looks pretty good, and plenty of blank canvas to do what you want to it as well

I've got this tent with the side poles, couple of minutes and it's up. It rocks!

I'm sure roof top tents have their place but if you want simplicity, the canvas teepee style tents are the go.

Thanks guys, just picked up the trailer and roof top tent. Plenty of space to store my stuff in. Trailer looks very good, new tyres, lockable, and the tent is pretty much unused. happy.

I might look into the side poles... they were an option when I bought it but its so easy with the center pole I never chased it up. I have the the oztrail tourer 9 PLUS with the extending back section. There is so much room inside that the pole being in the centre is not an issue at all... but I still might look int the side poles.

fyi with the side poles its really a 2 man job to erect. You can do it incrementally by yourself but its a bit of a hassle

I have the tourer 9 swift pitch takes a minute to set up, no centre pole so bonus, and for quick stay it's almost better than a swag, just need to factor the time putting up a stretcher. I also have a camper trailer, yep the camper trailer takes about 30 mins to setup and there is some technique to getting the poles straight and extended especially over the bed, but for longer stays and a better nights sleep the trailer rocks.
So if you are doing a quick camp roadside it the swag, an overnight or 2 in a campsite the swift pitch tourer, or a longer stay or a it more luxury the camper trailer!

not really . just attach one side pole and extend it till it takes some of the weight. attach the other one and do the same and then extend both till tight and remove the centre pole . Adds another couple of minutes onto the setup time .

elhucko - well done , seems like you got a bargain :-) and Id have to say I like the idea of a roof top tent but only on a trailer!! - on top of the car/4WD is quite simply a PITA !! and I would never do that. Imagine running out of beer and having to pack up the tent to do a beer run ?? On the trailer just makes so much more sense!!

One thing you might want to look at is stabiliser jacks on the trailer when you are parked up - stops the bouncing and rocking when you are enjoying the after dinner entertainment !!

To all of those with a oztrail tent or the like - yes I have one of those that I use when I cant take the off road camper - and its a great option (the tent) but - I like the comfort of a decent bed and a full kitchen and space for when the weather is a bit average.

Oh and the canvas tents are bloody heavy and bulky ...... but yes they work well !!

Agree with Lambie, I myself have a rooftop tent on the trailer, and then a small compact tent for hiking.
The Oz trail tents are kind of an annoying middle ground IMO, too heavy to hike with but then its not actually comfortable, yet its not quite camping?? Idk

lol why would you hike with a canvas tent ?

A good self inflating matress makes the oztrail a very comfortable weekender tent . Handles downpours with ease. Easy to setup
