Built my first foil the last few weekends and it's turned out pretty similar to this. No idea if mine will work yet so thought one of these kits might be a good plan b if mine fails dramatically because there's no way I can afford a flash one
kit has YouTube instructional to go with it so hard to get it wrong.
Hi Matt
I have one of the standard foils. I had no previous fibreglassing experience but with the videos James has on YouTube and some messing round I was able construct the foil. I've been out about six times now and I'm getting better each time.
I made my own "board" out of a project sheet of marine ply from Bunnings. The board is nowhere near as good as a proper surf board or some of the other project boards on this forum but it works for now.
I see that James has recently released a surf/sup foil as well. Its been a low cost way for me to get started foiling and its been interesting learning along the way. If you don't mind a bit of fibreglassing I don't think you'd have any issues with it if your current foil doesn't work out.
Thanks for the reply mate. Good to know it works. I just bolted mine to a 10 buck ply skim board from toy world. Tested it the other day, it went up for a bit but my mast to base plate join gave in. Any tips on amount of glass to put on this joint to make it solid. Will try strengthen my one up but if it all gets to hard I might just get the kit. (Was my first go at proper fibre glassing too besides patching a tank like rough farmer)
From memory I used between 10 and 14 layers per side of 4oz cloth to join the top plate and the mast.
I also used some microfibers to add strength to the join. www.westsystem.com/403-microfibers/
