Curious to know if there is any tricks to baggage discounts when bringing a board back from interstate flying ?what Airline is best ?etc, etc?
I remember flying Qantas to Maui I was advised to always refer to it as a surfboard and not a sail board. Never paid excess in 5 trips. We also used to leave the board away from check in, point to your "surfboard", get a baggage tag and take it to oversize counter. Don't know if you can still do that.
failing all of the above, take up kiting, get a "golf" kiteboard bag never pay excess again...
If they hear the term 'sailboard' and they don't really know what it is they will say its too long, because the old documents have sailboards with '1-piece' masts.
If they look puzzled, its a 'long surfboard'.
Generally they feel sorry for you and give you a submissive look and wave you through, then as you look behind they're talking **** about you with the gay hostess![]()

I tried traveling with kite-gear once, but it was the gay cabin steward that was trying to talk to me.... what's with that? ![]()
