Just finished watching Season 2 of Vikings and I have to hand it to them over GoT. I find the story lines more enjoyable (probably the more realistic historical nature of them and the fact that they have been blended with historical events), interesting religious beliefs, political issues within the villages themselves, the shear lunacy of some of the story lines and their attitude to s*x. I reckon its a ripper of a TV Series. I love the emphasis on a good death - so that you can go to val-hella. The blood eagle was just an epic episode.
I rate Lagertha over Daenerys Targaryen. Dragons are so pffffft - I prefer a shieldmadien any day of the week.
A few of the reasons why I enjoy GoT, both the books and the TV show. Firstly I like the idea of magic, dragons and all that supernatural stuff was around. That sort of stuff died out hundreds of years ago so all that matters today is cold steel and gold. However those old things are coming back. Its great how Ned Stark died at the end of the first book/season, ie the main character is gone, especially as he did have a way to live but was too inflexible to see it. Plenty of other reasons why I like GOT too. I actually like the books more.
I've seen Vikings and enjoy it too for the reasons mentioned. Its interesting to see how the pagan Germanic religion interacts with Christianity. Its also interesting to consider the English that the Vikings plunder were basically the same as the Vikings a couple of hundred years before.
Tough call. Have to give it to GoT. Much bigger storyline, I mean very ambitious, it takes 2-3 eps just to get round the characters and catch up with what they're doing. Vikings ultimately has less going on, less room for story to develop. (huddle/plan in winter, raid/fight each other in summer, England/farming being the wildcard/expansion). But the bigger story with GoT can be it's undoing - hard to stay on top of who's who unless you binge watch it. Defo one that you can watch again from S1E01 and pick up heaps.
Really enjoyed both. But I think I give it to GOT. I'm a Tolkien fan, I first read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings about 35 years ago. I'd have to rate George Martin and his work up there alongside Tolkien. Just the sheer volume of his work (each book is over 800 pages) writing about a world, culture, political system, magic system etc etc that he invented in his own mind is simply amazing. Whilst the writers of Vikings had a well researched history to base their stories about. But both are fantastic shows.
The same but different I can't wait for the next Star Wars movie to be released
, its currently in production for release in 2015. Then it'll be a case of watch all the existing movies in the correct order to catch up on the storyline again.
GOT for the storylines...Vikings for the sword fights...gotta agree about the shield maidens...is it just me of has Rhagnars second wife Princess whats her name got more odd looking the longer series went on? When he meet her she was smoking now I reckon she looks like some weird alien hybrid....I like the fact that Rhagnar tried to go for the threeway when the princess rocked up!!
Gotta love Ragnar's face in bed at the end of the last episode of the season, got his 2 wives and now king...

Maybe she is just ageing - they have been away a fair bit in recent years
That offer of a threesome was hilarious !
