Ahh the Taurus. Didn't know if it was coming or going, but we all knew it was going from the start...

As for the last Falcon, it's Ford's last ditch failed attempt at designing the first decent looking Falcon since the 1970's.

One more hexagonal grille a decent design will not make. Looks good on a Mondeo, but as a face transplant for the Falcon it just looks contrived.

Just like Ford admitted they got carried away with the Falcon AU's oval theme, I reckon Lexus will one day admit they got carried away with the hourglass grille.

I was looking at Laird's F type on Google to figure out wtf it was. Ford have really lost the plot in recent years - they used to make beautiful looking trucks pre 1990.



Rarely have volvos got it right. What an ordinary looking thing this is.

^^^ I used to work at a car wash in the late 70's and the Citron rear wheels had to run on the inside of the roller track. Took a couple of attempts to get them lined up (not sure the wings would survive the high speed brushes though). That car has always fascinated me!..

I think Ford have transitioned the big grille on the latest falcon to get us ready for the US replacement model and/or the Mondeo.

I have a FG falcon, the first model, and I like the shape, but the new model front end looks ugly and its like it has been tacked on by a different stylist. Even the tail-light/boot treatment looks bad. I really think they have done this to get ready for the replacement shape.

Just on the FG Falcon, in my experience its a good car. Excellent fuel economy, and great power. My friend didn't believe me when I told him the base model has 195Kw and the injected LPG versions have over 200Kw. They seem to have ironed out a few bugs, and for my money, its a good car.

Yes the original FG is a better balanced shape and the engineering excellent. I think you're right about the grille, although it first appeared on the Focus and then the Mondeo I think. The Falcon copped the final insult of hexagonal grille conformity. Even Subaru and Hyundai have one. It's fashion and you know what usually happens to fashion.

I've got a name for the current model inspired by it's oversized and dominating grille - Whale Shark.

regarding the new falcon pic;

shocked to hear myself say it, but I think it's not that bad and a bit better than what holden have come up with

I thought both commodore/falcon were starting to get the styling right at around 2009-ish

then recently holden went for the slanty head light/tail light, and it all started to go a bit generic mazda/nissan/korean/feminine/asian looking - just a big 4 cylinder car style, and lacking masculinity imho

Yep that Taurus was hideous, I was looking for a good pic to add. Couldn't tell if it was coming or going with the sloping boot.

Apparently (from memory) they imported a very highly respected English car designer who actually taught the most prestigious car design university course in the UK and let him loose.

He was inspired by ships, the bit at the back is a kind of porthole.

Agree 100%. Not just trying - that's actually where it comes from. The problem is, you can't simply transplant one good element from a totally different car/object onto another and expect it to work. On the Mustang it's great.

Although not a production car this "monstrosity" spotted on the side of the road in Leongatha Victoria certainly appears to have been given a good belting with the "Ugly Stick". A bit of research and some anecdotal evidence points towards this being one of two that were built and used to ferry the "metre maids" around the Gold Coast many years ago. Badged as a "Rambler Royce" this entire car appears out of proportion, the "Gold" livery just adds to the gaudiness and kitsch appearance, some beautiful details but IMO an absolutely atrocious finished product.

On the Mustang it looks good. I wonder if they couldn't fit the same opening onto the falcon because of other parts of the bumper bar? I think if they gave exactly the same opening to the Falcon, it would look okay. Instead it seems to be truncated and doesn't quite align.

You've given me hope though. Maybe an aftermarket bumper would give that same look as the mustang.
