Just got this on sky news,,,"Under the deal the Afghan government will release 5,000 Taliban prisoners as a good will gesture and in return the Taliban will release 1,000 Afghan security forces." Just looking at the figures, are we safe?

Well, it is a peace deal.
Although it seems to be put together to benefit Trumps political ambitions above all, so not expected to last beyond the year..
When you ask "are we safe" do you mean from terrorist attacks by the Taliban on Australian soil?

Everything seems to point towards a requirement to maintain our obsequious military alliance with the US while they protect their gas and opium interests. Nothing else makes much sense.

Russia had the same plans but the US beat them to it - twice.

Has nothing to do with caring about Afghanistan or peace.

True but if the US disengages from the asia pacific then china will either buy us or invade us in the long run so probably best to keep the US on side eh.

I don't see how one follows from the other, but at least we agree on the geo-strategic objectives for the war.

I think if China decided to invade Australia, there's bugger all the US could do to stop them. That would be nuclear war and that's not happening. It's not in China's interests to invade countries like Australia. It destabilises the entire world and that's bad for business.

With falling australian dollar and free money printing , Chinese could buy Australia, Eventually all money paid in hard cash means less expenses then any war. Once they reach 51% of voting population they could invoke new law , legally opening borders to all Chinese origin citizens. This how democracy works and can be used against you one day. 1550mln people could win any votes, referendum against 24mln.

If US spend 2.5 trillion dollars to occupy now few km2 of Iragi land and setup military base there, imagine what and how much Chinese could legally buy for similar monetary investment. Here In Australia where farming land is still cheap as dirt.

2.4 bln *0.65 connversion AUD-USD / 2.2k per hectare = 1,680,000 Ha of agricultural land !!! (16,800km2)
we are talking about very productive, relatively expensive farming land, as a desert land could be bought myuch cheaper at bulk prices.

Now, if Queen fall into financial difficulty she may decide to sell some of her overseas rural land to higher bidder.

Or Mr Johnson may found new bright future for afterbrexitiers, lasting at last till next cadentions.

Releasing 5000 talibans to me sounds like rearming their base.

Who cares? Its their country. Would we like it if the Afghans started complaining about how the Australian Army operates?

Last time I heard the Australian Army helped invade Afghanistan with the American Army. Meanwhile the only time I've heard about Afghans in Australia is when they brought over camels to build telegraph lines across the outback. Of course we have a few Afghan people out here now, mainly due to them being refugees from war.

If it's "bang on the money" I don't think the US would be agreeing to it.

The Peace deal was between the USA and Taliban
On Sunday The Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Stated that they would not release any Taliban in Afghanistan
Here is a quote from the BBC

"But on Sunday, Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani told reporters his government had agreed to no such release."There is no commitment to releasing 5,000 prisoners," Mr Ghani said. "This is the right and the self-will of the people of Afghanistan. It could be included in the agenda of the intra-Afghan talks, but cannot be a prerequisite for talks.""

So it seem that Trump is making a fool of himself as usual

Not really fake news, the fake news is no one questioning this fellow stating:

"This is the right and the self-will of the people of Afghanistan."

This is fake, it's a lie. Does any politician know the self will of the people let alone caring about their rights? Only when it suits the agenda, usually.

If the foreign soldiers leave Afghanistan, as they should, this president if he is smart, will leave shortly afterwards too, otherwise he will be killed. Not many of the "people of Afghanistan" will shed a tear either.
