Poor VW need to spend now hundred billion of dollars to fix the mess they did.

At the end that is completely wasted billions of dollars that doesn't do anything good for the money, beside sense of fulfilled ravage and punishment.Their ( VW) cars are as good or better then others on the market, but solution must be find to resolve.

IMO the most rational could be such solution that punish VW and rectify harm made to our green environment , without money to be wasted unnecessary.

Volkswagen should be now given an option to produce/ manufacture fully electric cars at equivalent value of that billions of dollars fines.Global balance for environment by adding electric fleet to replace dirty combustion vehicles, will be much greater that proposed now fixing software bug. VW could also restore reputation by producing fully green vehicles, zero emission, electric vehicles.Obviously by entering this market by such huge company may effect other EV manufactures, but a bit of competition on this long overdue market could only serve us - consumers well.

How about instead, similar idea, but fine VW those billions $ and give it to a competitor for them to produce an electric car. Say, give it to Tesla. Or give it to all affected VW buyers in the form of a discount to buy a Tesla. Punishment to the offending party plus social engineering at the same time.

It could be ultimate shame to take that hard earned money , by all Volkswagen customers, and millions of workers in their factories, then give to few snobs, driving luxury limousines.I am sure that VW could mass produce decent electric vehicles at price range $15,000 to 30,000 after some incentives ( read punishment reinforced for braking the rules) .

Even better - force VW to put Gordon Murray's T25 and T27 cars into production, establishing a number of his new design factories around the world.

That would put simple and cheap to build, cheap and easy to maintain, and probably the most economical petrol [T25] and electric [T27] cars available in the reach of the average punter.

Their market cap (overall value) graph is similar but less .. insane. There are (still) some bigger competitors. The trend is very sharply up though.

Have a look into Elon Musk's plan for Tesla and you'll see it's: start pricey, move to unit volume as they develop the tech and the capacity to mass produce.
Have a look at the new model and it's price.

"overpriced xxx for snobs" is how most game-changers are written off by those that can't afford to be an early adopter, such as mobile phones..

Yeah, yeah, you keep on defending VW diesels, but whichever way you want to slice it and dice it, they cheated and could not meet the requirements that they had to meet. They had a choice, compete on a level playing field by producing a diesel that met emissions requirements, or appear better by cheating on the emissions and delivering better economy and power.

They cheated. They shouldn't be applauded for it.

I wonder how common cars in the USA are that use 15 to 20L per 100km? I know its a stereotype of big cars, but last time I was there there were a heap of smaller cars running around, so you argument probably doesn't even stack up.

We are using Fords and Holdens in Australia derived from US based companies that are no doubt using the same engine management systems and we aren't seeing anything near 20L per 100km, so I don't know who you are comparing cars with.

What do you know about nitrogen oxides from diesel versus petrol powered cars?

This happens more than you might think. Cars are recalled all the time and often done as part of the service, so you would never know anything has happened. I suspect that 'world cars' that are common to many markets get less recalls, but I am sure it still happens.

What they are saying is the jack is designed to match the vehicle it is supplied with. - and not any other make/model.

An alternate vehicle may well fall within the safe working limit for the jack, but the jacking points in the vehicle may not necessarily fit the jack correctly.

One of our company cars came home with a stuffed jack after being used on another car at a roadside breakdown.

The vehicle's under-body seams ended up being clamped into the top of the jack.

It had sheet metal damage by the time the jack was pried loose.
