A few would know that Ocearch is Tagging Tigers in WA. I had a look today quickly at the website and thought i share this one shark caught and tagged.
So after being tagged, 72 hours later it has traveled over 2104 miles

That would mean it was swiming 46 km / hr for 3 days non stop.

It's looking for MH370!

Seriously though they have been tagging Tigers out from Cairns After they where refused to get permission to tag Great Whites at Neptune Islands.

And in a remarkably straight line!

Something must be amiss with that tag.

Pretty cool though!

Perhaps it's a tag that was left on and was not fitted to a shark and now they are steaming to Maldives!

Seems a long way for a shark to travel in three days

The tag only pings when to comes the surface, so it will only draw a straight line from point to point. It seems far fetched, but WA scientists are all on board and it is well documented. I find it so interesting as compared to the others, who have stayed close by

I just thought it would be of interest and thats why i shared the info

If it's a spot tag then they can apparently send wrong info from time. I think they are doing a story on Today Tonight

Waiting for the story to come on.

Is this science? As in science science?

Sadly, the website crashed twice for me, so I couldn't check all the links.

Seriously, is this valid science? Serious question for those in the industry. Subasurf?

Sharks will be last on the program I guess, they're the most "sensational" topic for the day.

Maybe this shark is b-lining for a tigerette on heat. He knows what he wants. Ambitious

Would the tiger, or tigress, be able to fulfil such a desire after such a marathon journey?

Or would he/she consider the loss of upwards of 70% of territory worthy of such effort?

Look out for the taggee remaining in the area for a couple of days to collect it's thoughts.

IMO the pin has been placed close to the butt of the shark and he is bolting as fast as he can to escape the bastard fish biting him!

...Yeah, that kind of footage pisses me off. I wonder if all that teasing is making them not like humans very much, maybe a reason they have started eating and biting more of us. And apparently I'm the prick because I'm not opposed to having some of them culled.

Looks like it has smashed itself up a bit whacking into cages.

What's the point in tagging sharks in the NW? The blokes who dive up that way already know they will encounter sharks at some stage sooner rather than later.
Wouldn't it be far more beneficial to tag more in Perth and make the beaches safer?

The State government has refused their offer to tag Great White sharks. So this was the best they could do as they are hoping to get a foot in the door, so to speak, to eventually be able to tag in the South for GW's. Stupid IMHO that the government said no, It makes no sense at all..

Many people are against Ocearch as they don't like their heavy handling of the sharks. For me i find their research relevant and interesting and would love to see more transparency from our local Scientists, but that will never happen so in place of the void, i fully support Ocearch. They simply get the job done. Something that seems to be laking in the WA fisheries/government mentality

How/why are they heavy handed? What part of their process is controversial?

I've never understood the criticism they receive. Like you say, they get the job done.

Most say its to do with the tiring them to a point of exhuastion first on a fishing line, then lifting them out of the water in a cradle. Sharks organs/body structure is not designed for that and i guess thats the issue. Some see them as flashy and money grabbing, just looking for glory.

BUT you get extremes in anything. Many people i know will argue that we should simply leave the sharks alone and not interfere with them at all. Those people however do look at the bigger picture. Thats the one were we are getting attacked and shark attack's will only increase. So better IMHO to try and find some solutions to live in harmony (As best we can with a wild animal). Devices, spotters, better education

The ocean is simply too big to control, we can't afford to lose Large sharks from that ecosystem. We are supposed to be the smarter species on the planet, yet we have far from proven that to date

This is on tomorrow night if anyone is interested.

JBShack, I hear that a lot - sharks aren't designed to be caught like that/held out of water, yet evidence suggests they do just fine. One, the sharks that are tagged by ocearch, and many land - based sharkers around the world, survive just fine for the most part, despite being out of the water briefly.

People who say to leave them fully alone are just as bad as the gantry hunters. Inaction is just as lethal, especially in this day and age.

As for ocearch - I think they should be allowed to tag all sharks they come into contact with. LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE!!!! All the sharks they've tagged in AU waters are doing just fine. I for one am following their tagged Tigers with great interest. Let's hope common sense prevails, and crews like them are seen as help rather than a hindrance.

Also, the university of Miami did a study recently on stress levels on line-caught sharks. All sizes, most species. They found that the survival rates in requiems was virtually one hundred percent.

Have a look at the way the political system works, and you have the answer.

Neither side (because in reality there are only two) of government is sure which side of the debate over sharks has the greater voter base.

Let's face it, they only need one term in government and they and their offspring are set up for life.

Why would you be worried about a few beachgoers being eaten, that you will never meet, if the voter support is against culling a few whites?

Politics at it's best, and yet again, there is NOTHING the public can do to stop it.

Have a protest, have a rally, break some pollie's window. Nothing will change thee way the macvhine of government works, here and abroad.

Poor hungry sharks, they should use the old pollies dressed in their italian suits to feed them, and thereby teach the young recruits some respect for their constituants.

Poor, poor sharks. Don't worry, they'll survive.

Actually i was also wanting that answer. The best i can figure is this.

WA fisheries did want them too tag GW sharks. BUT Great Whites are protected Federally and that means they need federal approval. To get that the scientists in charge is CSIRO and they did not want anything to do with Ocearch. They say its because they bring nothing new to the table but for me i believe its more a political issue again. CSIRO work closely with the Cage divers and actually the Cage divers have been involved in almost all the operations (at least the ones conducted around South Aus). The cage divers are worried that firstly the sharks could temporally leave the area after being tagged (thats no good for business apparently) and secondly big tags look nasty on what they call "Their Sharks". The problem with that is their is two distinct populations at Neptune Island. The East coast and they have had a lot of work done and a lot is known about their movements. However the Western population that swims up our coast has virtually nothing. Political problems once again getting in the way of personal safety
