leave the esky lid at home mate. unless there is a very late cyclone you won't get any surf. that big bit of coral stops the swell hitting the coast

Incorrect. Obviously you have not been up to QLD to see for yourself. Last couple of weeks, we're getting anything from 2 foot to 2 *metres* of waves off some coastal spots around the islands and some nicely protected bays just north of Townsville. Plenty of pics on facebook if you look.

Airlie Beach is no exception, but it really comes down to winds and direction. At the moment there is nothing. Window of opp is about 2 to 3 days and that's it - like inland lakes, etc. You really need to just be prepared and time it right and search. You will find the waves, even in places you'd least expect. But bring your biggest board. An esky lid would sink more likely.

when i lived in fnq i saw maybe 3 or 4 days a year with anything close to surfable waves on the coast. maybe we have different ideas of what surf is...

I lived in cairns for a year, there is one point on the way to port Douglas that breaks one or two weeks a year at chest height tops. Take a fishing rod some hiking shoes instead

Nothing in Airlie, Mackay , harbour beach is for you, come May you just need a 1030 +++ high to squeeze the isobars/wind up the coast to generate the happy pills your after. As lofty says theres oportunitys up here, just need to be open minded.
And a booger in NQ, never seen one before, only advise would be to not look under the surface, animals everywhere.
