Classic example is apples.

If we had the same yield rate for grain as it was a couple of hundred years back, a loaf of bread would probably cost 50 times more than it does today.

Please note that there are differences between GM and Selective Breeding. GM is when you introduce a "foreign" gene into the host. An example is introducing a certain gene into common food crops such as corn, tomatoes, etc. Selective Breeding is used for centuries by grain farmers to enhance the yields and other desirable characteristics.

either kill them off, or breed them out.

I'm guessing the cross-breed fish are bigger, more aggressive, possibly eat relatively less for more growth compared to "standard" breed fish, and the bigger, more aggressive and probably hornier males either kill or chase away the "standard" male fish to mate with the "standard" females.
