Riding up hills is so crxp. How much is a decent dual Susser E-bike.? I have begun to google but a lot of the bikes are overseas brands we don't get here. I know the original Trek's are cheap but also shxt and the new ones crazy expensive.
Is there such a thing as a half-decent dual suspension bike that is not astronomically priced? What models are good. Thinking of trying to get a few mates and do a group buy or something.

Man up and pedal.
Or if you don't like pedaling and exercise, that's what motorbikes are for.

These things were the best value ebikes - I've got one too. Perfectly sorted, absolute blast. No new ones available in Aus anymore (superseded), although there may be some of this lesser model still available from 99 bikes:
www.99bikes.com.au/merida-eone-sixty-500se-41cm-silk-titan-black-2020-1

Some tips in no particular order:
use your local bike shop - they do go wrong and are less amenable to home maintenance- - warranty is usually two years
look at Merida, Giant, Trek - the eReign is a nice bike and I liked the grunty Yammy motor (For the Riders had a good special on last week)
Specialised are expensive for what you get and the Brose motors crap out with great regularity (but they are good for warranty, just delays is all)
demo, demo, demo
go aluminium imho - weight is less of an issue and it's way more robust
check out bike exchange on the net, also fb pages like E-BIKE Australia
if you are buying second hand remember the batteries lose capacity with time - particularly if they have been stored at 100% (I store mine at 50% and only charge up just before a ride) - you can check batteries with the app usually - so ask to see it.

Enjoy the hunt.

Mountain biking is awesome fun that is the only activity I can schedule with family and mates.
Surfing (sup or minimal), windsurfing, sailing or fishing are so dependent on best conditions.
More middle age these days and was thinking in 5 years where e bikes would be really refined!
But I had an opportunity to use one earlier this year and actually they exceeded my expectations.
I have developed a heart condition (A Fib) that if you get it you can't peddle up any hill and getting it sorted but one guy had an ebike and swapped so I could ride from the furthest side back to carpark on his spec levo ( with upgraded suspension) but 180mm fork with 29 wheels the trade off with less travel and 27.5 wheels I didn't like the feeling in tight burms.
It seems that are lot of e mtb are 29 or mullet with 29 front (to roll over) 27.5 rear like the Mereda or 2019 just 27.5 which is an exceptional bike by all rewiews!
The new 2020 Trek Rail are a big improvement with shorter chain stay and geo but since is pricing in NZ is high but they are 29 (love 27.5 size).
You can buy a cheaper bikes and most of the time you get what you pay for.

Looks interestingly "over-powered. The problem I can see with that is you would need to build up your rear wheel so as to deal with all of that extra torque. 1000W is massive.

The latest Specialized Levo SL is now weighing in at close to 17kg.

www.specialized.com/us/en/turbo-levo-sl

Pretty amazing really given it is now the weight of most "non-powered" dual suspension. I have ridden the Levo and it is an awesome bike. The SL version only has 240W of power, but with that weight it is more than enough. The problem is the $$$$$$ for a machine like that. Looking at $10k +

^The 5 or 6 guys with them I knew never had issues. And they ran them on nice bikes through to clunkers. Get good range and about 70km/hr.

My 250w (cough cough) BBS02 has been totally reliable for 4 years now. Onto the second battery. I used it as a work commute with slicks and mudguards for much of that time. Just recently turned it back into a hard tail mtb with an extra wheel trailer in preparation for the Munda Biddi down to Albany in the spring.

The only issue with using it as a full on mtb, I understand, is securing the motor so it doesn't swing down and/or break the axle when coming off jumps. For that application, this is probably better

But we're not buying stuff from Kaos any more, are we?

There were a few of us quite bemused the summer before last at Dutchies after a Sunday session on the water.

An e-bike punter pulled up on the grassed area to watch a bit of water action when 2 police bikes pull up next to us and one proceeds to ride up the kerb and on to the grassed area to "talk" to the e-biker.
For about 45+ minutes the officer goes over the offending guy's e-bike with the help of a 3rd police bike cop.

When we asked the unfortunate rider what serious crime he'd committed - I thought maybe he didn't have his helmet on, possibly overtaking a car too fast or pulling wheelstands down the road! - but no!!

His crime was having an electric bike that was more powerful than the 250-watt motor that is apparently allowable in WA.

The going-over was still going when I gave up and went home. Now there's a good use of valuable police time!!

I went for the Giant Fathom E+3 29er. Hardtail to reduce weight and cost ($2800). It's not a top end bike, but it's been great so far.

In retrospect the weight isn't an issue, the motor takes care of that fine, makes hills and headwinds a pleasure.
