For a Gen5 Liberty wagon. No acccessories to be fitted, just plain racks to carry a couple of boards now and then. (Its not my main car)

Googled whats around as I have always had Rola / Rhino . Whispbar seems to claim a lot - including higher carrying capacity.

Googling the "best" aero bars and Rhino, Rola etc are not even on the list but Whispbar tops it. Hmmmm. Maybe cos its all yank results, never heard of the others on their list. Looking for aussie results gives me no real side by side comparo, just the usual whingers on Productreview.com etc...

I am a bit sus on Rhino since some I got for my fourby (secondhand) just won't sit right even with the wobbly feet that match the roof curve (apparently) and they seem loose. Online reviews talk of loose racks and zero customer service hmmmmm...

So is Whispbar worth the extra $100 ish? Other ideas?

Have had whispbar HD's for 18 months or so. No catastrophic failures with my boards (some 10ft+) attached. Didn't notice any extra noise at 100km/h after installation so I guess they are doing the job as advertised.

mark i have two sets of hd whispbars i am selling . upgraded to rhino rack so don't need em . Send me a pm if you are interested . the hd's are great as they have a tie down point on each end and also the track to add more eyelets

I have Rhino's on the 4x4 and only had slight increase in wind noise. I also have Rola's on my Mazda 3, which made a noise like being chased by a tornado. I have since changed the rubber in the strip to the bumpy one used in the Rhino racks and it reduced the noise considerably but now whistles at 60kph. Might just be the particular aerodynamics of my car that causes the issues with the Rola's, but I wish I went the Rhino's.

I have had a few different ones but the rhinos are the best and if you change cars you can keep the cross members and your only up for the clips

on the family car and fitted we got them for 440 maybe could of got them 50-100 cheaper if we shopped around a bit more but this place was near me house and they said they would do them on the spot....
if you upgrade/sell ta car the actual clips might be able to be used again and if not it's about 150 for new clips, me mates rhinos have done at least a dozen nw trips with up to 8 boards and no dramas as yet

Funny you say that about rhino racks Mark. I had some Proracks (yes cheap) and had continuous issues not holding. Lashed out on Rhino and kicked myself for wasting money on the Pro racks. Rhinos rock for me. well anchored and wouldn't budge.

Maybe the feet on the racks were not compatible for the roof.

The Rhinos that were on it, having been ripped off , needed replacement. Rhino don't even do the fitting kit or any parts anymore which I though pretty **** for a very common model. Thus having to get secondhand ones from a mate.


Won't be changing the new ones over to new car later anyway, this one has to last....

Now been looking further I am interested in the Whispbar / Prorack looking the same but one apparently being crap - and a no brand one on eBay that looks the same and they won't disclose the brand. I wonder if this is all a 'same factory different sticker' sort of thing...

Thule wingbar, haven't used them just herd from people with dual cab 4wd utes they are good. Not saying buy them just add them to your list to look at.

i call bull**** . I've ran proracks for years, the hd bars and never had anything let go . Securely attached to the car and use cam buckle straps .

^^ just going by my own experience. I would tighten the racks, load up and drive to location and they would come loose. Perhaps it was the syle. But they kept coming loose and I was not cool with that. Especially having all my kit strapped to the racks on my roof doing 100km/h

I have Proracks on my Triton and not once have i ever lost anything...

Have probably racked up 20K kms alone doing long distance trips and fairly hard 4wding in the last 18 months with SUP's, kayaks, 4wd gear permantly fitted (awning, recovery tracks etc) and fishing rods worth serious $$ and not once have i had a problem.

I'm pro Rhino

Bit bulky but strong, would have thought Rola would have been the most aero, the x-bars look like a wing.

Perfect fit, easy install, anti theft system and silent as !!!

I should add RAK is part of the Goldspar Group. I believe they were involved in the design and production of the Sea Skip Sailboard in the 1980s and yachtspars. I can't remember who designed the Sea Skip but I seem to remember it was possibly Frank Latta or Gary Birdsall ?

The telescoping part looks a a bit **** too....

I use it and it is great and aerodynamic.

I just knocked some brackets up out of 6mm flatbar n some pipe with the mig welder at work . drilled m8 clearence holes straight thru the roof. My roofrack outlasted the car. Infact you could sling the roof rack on all fours and crane it anywhere you want as a bonus

Does that step-up on the join make for something that could pointload a board when strapped down?

It is a robust rack and fit for the purpose of what I carry on it. The plastic arms do enable you to tie down around them if I understand your question correctly. I have carried a 1964 16 kg Cordingley longboard without issue at 110 km per hour down the freeway to Mandurah and return and with it another modern volane glass longboard on top (9kg extra). Windsurfing Equipment is childsplay. Watch the videos on the website which show more details for fitting and robustness. Under the FAQ it states that apparently RAK makes roof racks for Toyota and Daewoo and others: "RAK has been quietly exporting its roof racks for almost ten years to companies like Toyota South Africa and Daewoo UK. It has also been selling made-to-measure roof racks to car companies in Australia for many years. Chances are that the roof racks you see on a Audi, Jeep, Kia, Daihatsu or Daewoo were made by Rak..." Happy with my whispbars. Have had them on for 5 and a half years. Strong as, very quiet and never notice a change in fuel consumption.

I have the Thule Wingbar which is similar to the whispbar. One thing I would say with this style of rack is that because it doesn't stick out the sides for some types of loads you've got less practical carrying width. I carry bikes and paddle boards. With the bikes I can only fit two whereas on the other less efficient style people can squeeze a third on there. Paddle boards doesn't matter so much. Otherwise it's a great lockable bar.

Whispbar HDs have been good for me and the lug at the ends is strangely really useful.
