Hey all, anyone in the Scarbs/Doubleview/northern suburbs area that has a 3d printer that could remodel a RC car body ?
The current one which has been slightly mauled by my hound ( see pic above ) will be replaced as soon as I can track one down.

In saying, you will have a new template to work off but I would like it to be at least 2-3 mm thick as opposed to the .5mm standard body construction. Weight is not an issue, albeit 3mm could be a bit much, as I generally run heaps more battery through the cars to try to keep them out of hounds way.

The rest of the car is fine as long as he and other hounds can't get through the body to get to the electrics. Basically to make it a bit more Staffy proof.

Hey vb man, one of the library/unis in Perth has one you can use, my work got some stuff done their and you have to pay for materials but it's pretty cheap. We were building little models of mine equipment I will ask more when in the office, sorry the info is a bit ambiguous.
I don't know if they let you fly their unit or it's a uni students job but I know it was well reasonable

They are made from polycarbonate for a reason, ABS will be a poor substitute.
It can't be so rare that there is not a body available..?

Full metal everything, no need for upgrades, Sh6t hot shocks etal, just can't find a body for it.
Some days I have 10 - 12 hounds boogying along behind it. I should be charging for the service
I'm just after an original body to take a template from and to try to create a much harder, malleable body, that can handle a bit of carnage if and when the hounds get hold of it

The little f#$%er did a superman out the passenger window yesterday arvo.
Was only doing about 40 ks on a soft corner and whoosh he was gone, hung a hard right to not run him over
and saw him rolling down the road to the left of me
Notnin broken but a bit bruised and battered.
Guess he'll be a bit more car savvy from here on

I can do it,

Have replicated stuff before, mostly way more intricate than what you are after.

I'd recommend printing in PETG rather than ABS or PLA, as PETG is a lot more resilient.

Only problem is that you'd have to post it to me unless you can take some accurate measurements and pics.

Below is the original on the right and duplicate on the left for something I did last week.

Edit: Here's one that someone else has done, probably won't fit your chassis though.

I was driving down the border fence of Hereroland in Namibia when an ostrich appeared on the road. The Land Rover was doing top speed at 80 ks with the bird out front and the mutt going ape on the front seat when the passenger let go of him. Flew out of the window and I watched in the mirror as he rolled umpteen times.

Obviously gave him a bit of a fright because he jumped straight back in through the window without giving any though to continuing the pursuit.

Similar here - my blue heeler used to hate going around corners in the sidecar - and would bail out, bounce and skid a few times on the gravel, then jump back in when he caught up around the corner [usually leaking claret]

He had "a thing" about snakes and goannas on the road - his eyes would be locked on them.
As the sidecar went over his "target", his boofy great head would go over the front of the sidecar - followed by the rest of him.
Due to dopeydawg' being bigger than the sidecar's ground clearance there was usually a few chunks missing when he jumped back in.

Yeah, they are complete fkn idiots when it comes to getting hurt.
E:g, grabbing a coldie out of the fridge, turn around and knee him in the face (not knowing he was there ) and the response is, "Hey I luv ya dad", and heaps of licks.
Still haven't managed to train him to bring me a tinnie from the fridge without piercing it, but we're working on it
Hopeless guard dogs too, they'd be more likely to lick an invader to shreds than ever bite him/her.

Anyway, back on topic.
Have any of you super cyber geeks out there managed to track down an original body for said car above ?

the problem u seem to have is a cheap RC car has a cheap body. The thick polycarbonate bodies on race buggies take more of a beating than your dogs give it

Go go to a RC store and find a 1/8 body that will fit, or post on rctech.net and find out what will fit.

Gonna be cheaper than buying a body and then paying to have it duplicated on 3D printer

Nebbs, considering the body is 1mm thick is sagging a problem if trying to print one.?

Hey Markie, it's not a 1/8th or a 1/10th, it's a 9.5, hence why I'm struggling to find a body match.
The one at the top is a true 1/8 and it's my next loved thing after my hound, run it on 6s and does 30 meter airs. ( lineal )
But I won't take that one out with the hound as repairs on that one can be quite substantial being a HPI

So once again, I'm asking if anyone could help me source an original body for a FS Racing 9.5 Truggy (yes I've tried ) that I can get remade a little more concrete like, to withstand the onslaught of doggys if and when they get hold of it.

I would be making the 3D shell to be used as a vacuum form rather than a body. I make my own 3D cowls for boats and even sponsons for my hydros but they are heavy and flexible and I think you may get lots of cracking with the pounding that the cars get. What getting an existing 1:10 body and using a heat gun modifying it to suit the chassis, my buggy bodies always get distorted when I leave them in a hot car but I just heat them up to remodel them.

I totally agree (and logged in this morning to suggest this). Making a form wouldn't be hard, just make it out of wood or something. I wouldn't bother with buying a premade shell, as that would probably be vacuum formed anyway.

Also the part would be bigger than my 3D printer so you'd have to glue parts together which wouldn't be strong.

Don't get me wrong I love 3D printing, but I don't think that it's really the right tool for the job in this case.

^^^ in that case make one (a plug mould) in wood, real smooth and paint it. Cover in mould release
kevlar / epoxy resin over top, remove plug.

VERY dog proof now :)

I can't offer an informed opinion except it sounds like the dog will destroy anything made out of plastic, sounds like VB needs there services of a sheet metal fabricator?

I got a blank body from a hobby shop then paint n taped it from underneath with heavy cloth tape.

gives it strength and flexibility. It won't split etc

Tempting, but if someone else's mutt gets hold of it and opens their face up on it, I might be up for a few vet bills.

As you can see from the op it was already getting clothed taped, but to no avail.
Still trying to track one down online. as hobby shops charge worse than hookers.
I'm having a bit of a thinkie about the aluminium body idea tho Chris.
Will have to smooth/round all edges as to not tear my or other dogs mouths to bits when they get hold of it.
As mentioned above, Staffies have no concept of pain.

What about a simple roll cage made from small diameter aluminium or steel tubing? if it's just for the hounds it doesn't need to look pretty and only needs the clearance to keep the teeth away from the electrickery?

Or, just teach the mutt to chase a tennis ball like most other dogs. And why did you take the box into the toilet to take the photo?

Haha, took the pic as most of my rc sh^t is in the laundry, right next to my dunny and was just chasing the best light.
Not a bad idea regarding the roll cage, tho I think it would be a bit more intricate and less cost effective than other options.
I reckon a hard body ally would be the better call.
Can you help me out in that regard ?

Hey all, have sourced a suitable body, a few mods were required.

Anyone keen to give it a go with a 3d printer ? Will probably have to layer it with something a little malleable afterwards, but I'll take care of that.

The original is looking way worse for wear, as I've been tying it down with cable ties for protection in the occasional event that the mutt gets hold of it.

Once again, cash is involved.
